I believe this is equivalent to traction control, however should it only be turned on when slippery conditions?

Everytime I get in the car the light is always off, even if it has been on before hand.

Yeah its on be default and its just traction control. Although its a little over sensitive, I personally flick it off with spirited driving to save me getting ****ed off with it stopping the power but leave it on when not.

Anti Slip Regulator stops power to the wheels when they spin. Light on is a warning to tell you it is switched off.

Only switch it off when you are trying to get traction on ice or snow at low speed.

got ASR on the Golf and it's properly ****, bordering on scary and I pretty much always switch it off. ESP on my Ibiza is loads better and I've never really felt the need/desire to switch it off

I always turn mine off as I find it pretty dangerous. Especially when pulling out of a junction in the wet.

Asr is rubbish!!

Esp on the other hand is fantastic

Ot trying to improve your time at Santa Pod.

I've not turned mine of yet but will be sure to investigate at some point :)

I take it the Fabias have both ASR or ESP dependant on year?

My early 04 has ASR and my chums late 04 has ESP.

Is ASR the same as TCS which my car has?

Phil

ESP was an option.

I retro fitted it to the vRS estate as ASR isnt great

It's not great agreed, very crude in what it does, but I fail to see how it's dangerous? I can pull away in pretty much any weather conditions without lighting my wheels up/engaging the asr.

How easy/expensive is it to fit? Is it a bosch or teves pump unit?

ASR is ok....never had any problems...but I turn it off for low speed manouvering in snow and ice......but actually less so the past two winters as the grip from the winter tyres doesn't trip it so much, so maybe tyre choice affects it? (well it would do due to grip levels of the tyre). What I do like is the EDL part of the ASR...very nice....wish I could just get that on it's own!...as I prefer to rely on my skill...and not some computer that can pack up (had that happen to me.. :S ).

On the OP.....ASR is confussing as it is "ON" (activated, standby) all the time (default). By pressing the switch the ASR light comes on in the instrument binnical indicating that the ASR is switched "OFF" (deactivated). But when the ASR is ON and the ASR light flashes at you, the ASR is actually working (activated, active). Or if the ASR light is on (fixed) and pressing the ASR button doesn't switch it the light out...then the ASR is OFF (deactivated) and you have a fault with the ASR/ABS unit which needs a code reader to read the codes.

Clear??? B):giggle:

ASR and TCS are the same thing just differnt names.....Anti Slip Regulation....Traction Control System

Brilliant, thanks for the help

I always thought the EDL was part of the ESP and not the ASR?

My ASR works fine with rainsports on on wet or dry....

(and retrofit ESP sounds interesting.... tell us more please Mr Techie)

@Matt1chelski

Pulling out of a juction is fine, its when your moving in first/second gear and plant it in the wet or if you hit a drain cover, I find it cuts power for a few seconds and leaves you stranded in the middle of a junction/roundabout.

Also +1 for more info about esp.

Never have I felt it is actually cutting the power out for a few seconds!

I can feel the power dropping and it squirming as it's shifting power around and applying brakes etc but it keeps on pulling and doesn't cut the power.

Phil

It would be very expensive to retrofit. New pump and control unit, brake lines, master cylinder, sensors and wiring. I swapped it all over from the donor car.

EDL (Electronic Differntial Lock) was part of ASR...ASR is part of ESP. On other cars of the same time eg VW Polos etc that got TCS (VW version of ASR) they did not get a version of EDL.....this is why I got the Fabia as EDL is very good.......used on the Subaru Imp' P1...also known as "fiddle brakes" in hill climbing. B)

Am I right in thinking then that EDL would be activated in a situation like driving spritedly through a corner?

My TCS light often flashes under these circumstances and I can feel the car pulling from side to side.

I have also tried the same corners driving fast with TCS off and all I get is one of the wheels spinning and indersteer. With TCS on I find the wheel doesn't spin constantly and the car goes where I point it.

As I stated you may or may not have EDL....check your owners manual as some VAG cars that had TCS didn't have EDL....also if you do have EDL it is permenently "ON"......with no "OFF" setting. B)

ATB>EDL :p

EDL was for petrols wasn't it?

When driven aggressively ASR is pants. If driven smooth then you never need it. Either way I prefer if I didn't have it.
