vRS Not charging

Featured Replies

Hi there,

I have searched and seem to have found a probable cause, but wanted some advice please.

My alternator pulley came off the other day. I drove the car home (without the alternator functioning) in order to fix it as I knew the pulley was on its way out, so I purchased a new alternator.

As I was driving home, there was no charge warning light.

Fitted the new alternator and the battery died last night, as the lights were killing the battery. I have noticed that the battery does not light up when the ignition is switched on.

It seems people have fixed this by finding one of the wires from the alternator is broken. Could this cause the battery to not charge under any conditions or would it just cause the battery light to not come on?

I know there are other topics on this but I am just concerned if this affects both the non charging and the light coming on.

It seems more than a coincidence that the light does not work since the belt came off, so I'm wondering whether the belt and pulley coming off could have knocked a wire out / broken one as i had no battery problems previous to this and use the car a lot.

Any help or advice is much appreciated

Thanks,

Andy

Trace the thin blue load sense wire all the way from the alternator to the plug on the front of the gearbox, and there's your problem.

Thanks for that. I found a connection here in front of the gearbox near the radiator drain. There was a wire hanging out of the connector. I have fixed this, but there is still no battery light on the dash i have charged the battery). Could anyone shed any light?

Thanks,

Andy

Are both wires ok?

I've completely removed the plug with the two wires in it and bridged them (down near the rad and gearbox). Are these the wires you mean? Thanks

Yeah thats it, how have you joined them back together again?

Yep, aleverything appears to be ok. The wire are definately joined now. A bit stuck for what else to do mate!

Found the problem. The lead on top of the battery box's bridge was broken. It looks like someone has soldered it as a repair in the past. Battery light now on. Thanks for all your help! Andy

Glad your sorted ;)
