Brake Pad Warning light On

Featured Replies

The brake light warning came on today , no chance of changing them this week , am i ok for a few hundred miles to go . Thanks

depends on how you define "a few". did ~200 km with the light on till i managed to change them, and they were at their limit (pads started to crack)

try not to stretch it...

I did about about 500 when my light came on - but I did give the pads a visual check. The wear indicator is designed to come on before the pads *must* be changed. I think it comes on between 2-3mm, and the min friction thickness is 2mm, so in theory you might have a 1mm of friction to play with before you hit the min thickness (new pads have 7mm of material, iirc)

it very much depends if the disks were changed during the last pad change. if yes, then it's possible to have uniform wear and have the extra 1 mm to play with. if they haven't there might be uneven wear in the pads (as was my case)... do a visual on them as suggested above, but beware: you won't be able to see if they develop cracks looking at them just from the outside...

The other point to make is if you have a bit of a lip on your disks, the pad backing will come into contact with the lip before the pad is actually below minimum thickness. This will be easy to detect, as they'll make a horrible grinding noise when you brake and it'll leave a mark on the pad backing.

Booked it in 2 have Discs and Pads changed tis week as i am away , and no need to drive the car . Was going to do myself , but decided to let the garage put on the full set i purchased from E CARPARTS with the 30% discount and there labour charge is less than my time being spent on it , plus going to have a full Fluid change at the same time , as i had done the Rears a few months ago .

just to throw something else into the mix, have you checked the wire on the sensor?

My light came on last week, turns out the sensor wire had come undone.

Shaun.

I managed to do enough miles once to wear through the sensor wire :giggle: I have always found that unclipping the plug from pad to the loom has been really difficult :S
