Steering Wheel Shake/viabration

Featured Replies

Hi Guys I have noticed a little problem with my Octavia 1.9 tdi 08. When I am driving and brake to slow down I get a viabration in the steering, when you leave the wheel it seems to shake, it appears more noticeable at high speeds. As soon as you take your foot of the brake it stops and it smooth.

I checked my brake pads there is plenty meat on them and tyres are ok. It only happens when I brake, any ideas?

Thanks

Yes, I think that you either have uneven deposits from the brake pad on a disc or there has been a bit of dirt on the surface where the back of the disc meets the wheel hub meaning that the disc sits slightly unevenly (even the smallest bit of dirt could then cause the disc to wobble-out of line). My money is on the former if it has appeared with time.

There is a useful article which explains this: Linky

I solved a similar problem by taking a disc off and giving both sides of the disc face a good rub down with wet'n'dry abrasive paper...or a couple of discs aren't too expensive

Does the brake pedal lift up and down slightly when youbrake? If so it could be a slightly warped disc and this can cause vibration.

Yes, as said - my money's on either a slightly warped disc, or a build-up of pad material on the disc.

How many miles have you done, and are you on the original discs/pads?

At present on the clock the octavia has done 107k on clock. I am not sure if the car is on the orignal discs, but I changed the brake pads about 5k ago.

The brake pedal seems fine goes up and down as it should.

Il check the discs and give it a spray with brake cleaner, it that does not cure it then disc change.
