Speakers for Front of car

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Just looking to upgrade the OEM door speakers in the VRS at long last.

I've seen the Alpine ones recommended on here.

Can anyone recommend others that are the right size, 16.5cm i think? and the right depth to fit and have a good quality sound to them.

Also do i need speaker surrounds?

All advice is gratefully accepted.

I'm fitting a pair of Pioneer TS-A171Ci components to my Fabia this weekend. They get a good review on TalkAudio and are easily shallow enough for the Fabia doors. I'll let you know how it goes :)

Thanks mate, let me know how it goes and more importantly how they sound

I've fitted Vibe Black Air 6's to mine.

Not cheap, But sound amazing.

Buy MDF spacer rings off ebay, Black Airs need spaced 40mm to fit!

I made my MDF rings

What is the best way to fix MDF rings to the door in a Fabia?

I guess you could use some countersunk screws in the first layer of MDF into U clips pushed over holes in door, then stick the next ring on top with some sealant and some countersunk screws to fix that to the first ring?!

The cost of the MDF rings on ebay you could probably get a budget jigsaw and sheet of MDF about the same price.

I got the Alpine's (SXE-1750S) I've seen recommended on here as they were cheap, but later read other posts here and elsewhere saying they're not great. Not yet got around to fitting them though. I reckon the low-end Pioneer components are a safe bet. After fitting a sub and setting the low pass filter on the HU for the door speakers, the original ones don't sound half-bad IMO.

i bought the alpines purely for budget reasons and they although they are 100 times better than oem ones they still arnt that great. wish i wouldve splashed out for higher end ones. Also now have the dreaded passenger door vibration which i cant seem to cure

I made my MDF rings myself, After that episode I'd save time and a load of hassle and just buy precut rings!

Dynamat/foam speaker tape/some sort of draught excluder might do the trick.

Dunno whether it's OEM or not, possibly not, but I've got small pieces of self adhasive foam attached to the door card near to the outside edge of the woofer. Stops the door card vibrating onto the speaker chassis or generally farting about as it's very close to the speaker chassis/surround. I CBA to fit my own kit so I went to a shop. Probably they ran into vibration issues and fitted these little foam bits.

Regarding dynamat etc, don't go mad with it. The fabia door/carrier is pretty hefty. It really doesn't need much in the way of sound deadening. Also, it's noted for being good for mid-bass. Only issue I have with it is the space to work with. You can't go much deeper than 60mm before hitting the window mechanism channel behind the woofer. After that you're into either having the speakers sat "on" the door cards or having to remake the bottom of the door cards/speaker grilles to suit finding maybe an extra inch of depth.

Check out CDT speakers which are shallow enough to fit easily and sound better than the Alpines and Pioneers already mentioned.

Don't forget to fit sound-deadening to the doors to maximise sound quality.

The replacement tweeters will go on the A pillars.

Would anyone like to sell me their original working drivers door speaker? Mine has popped and the girlfriend is giving me earache!

Thanks for all the tips upto now guys. How does the sound deadening work? Where/How is it fitted in the doors?

I believe the speakers do not cost much new at a dealers, £10 approx.

Thanks for all the tips upto now guys. How does the sound deadening work? Where/How is it fitted in the doors?

Ideal locations for sound deadening are:

1. directly behind speaker (not sure if it's easy enough to put a small square there without removing the big metal carrier inside the door).

2. on the surface the speaker mounts to.

Those going mad would remove the carrier, do the entire inside of the door skin, then replace the carrier and do all across the top of the carrier too.

http://www.talkaudio.co.uk/ipb/index.php/topic/57768-sound-deadening-definitive-guide-to-products-and-application/ is an in-depth guide to sound deadening and how it works.

Still have to fit my focal vr slim components... This thread has reminded me.
