Where did the oil go.

Featured Replies

Hi, I am quite new to this forum although I must say it is brilliant.

Please help if you can any suggestions will be wonderful

2 months ago, I bought an Octavia 2006 1.9tdi 4x4 in lovely red. 125k

As my first diesel I did some research and learned that I need to feed it oil, water, oil filters and fuel filters and she should last me a good long time

I notice almost immediately that after a 2-300 mile trip my engine oil was dropping fast. Not to panic I sent her in for a service.

New oil filter, engine flush, airlifter and basic check up.

Oil stayed level for a month and a bit,

This Tuesday morning before a run to London 300mile round trip I checked oil and it was a little low just above the criss cross marker on the dip stick. Today first drive of the day, 500 yards from home the red light came on BING BING (almost shat my self) I pulled over let her settle for 5 minutes then check the oil, way below normal running level.

Now this car to the best of my knowledge is running brilliantly, getting good consumption, loads of power for the 1.9. turbo sounds good and I can feel it kick in, there are no oil leaks anywhere to be seen and I am not getting loads of smoke out the exhaust (occasionally when I need power urgently I will see a bit of smoke)

I drive very calmly and am always looking for good consumption. (no one else has driven the car)

So why am I using up so much oil

one more thing, I thought the engine was really noisy when i first got her, but after reading on this forum, i found out that the 1.9 tdi is know to be noisy, but i am still aware of noise.

Have you checked for leaks anywhere? It shouldn't be burning that much oil that quickly.

I had the same engine in my Golf and it hardly used a drop of oil between services, that's even with 190k on the clock.

I didnt find the engine particularly noisy either.

have not seen a drop of oil come from under the engine. i am seriously considering just selling her on and getting something else. even though my mechanic who is brilliant (usually) thought she was running really well.

i was wondering if a blocked fuel filter might cause this as i have not had the fuel filter changed yet.

Do you know what brandname oil is in the engine.

maybe that´s the problem.

Or the turbo is "eating" up the oil

hi i am not sure what brand name was used during the service and ill find out what i have been using to top up with.

i was told if the turbo is eating the oil it should also cause exhaust smoke?? is that true.

There must be some problem there.

Worth checking what oil was put in there first.

I have the 1.9TDi BXE engine and between oil changes(10K) does not use any at all.I check it fortnightly now and its always spot on the level.

Good luck

Here in Portugal is recomended BP 7000 Turbo diesel 100% syntetic

Or Shell Helix Ultra 100% syntetic

On my Megane 1.9dci once I put Castrol GTX-3, didn´t find Shell on sale.

4000km later the oil light came on.

Put Shell again and didn´t ask at 4000km, actually at 10000km when changed still did not ask or ate that much (1/2 liter)

So, depending the oil it was used.

I personally think that you change oil and filter and see what goes.

If it's the same as my Golf PD130 it's the VW501.00

Correction - it should be any oil that meets VW 505.01 spec - this number must be on the container.

Sorry no thanks, oil with VW 505.01 spec from local store(mall brandname) is not equal to known brandnames.

I think you'll find that only well known reputable brands have the blending plant and the know-how to formulate oil to the exacting VW standards. If the oil meets these standards then it's O.K. Even Halfords branded oils in the UK are made by large reputable oil companies. Maybe things are are different in Portugal but here in the U.K. it is illegal to state that an oil meets a certain maker's specification when it doesn't and it's also illegal to wrongly describe/label products . The UK DTI & Makers are very strict on this.

As long as the correct spec is printed on the bottle then it IS suitable.

Check the coolant see if there is any oil in the water/anti freeze. I have an issue with another octavia of oil getting into the water system.

You can't blame the oil - it must have been something else

Assuming sump capacity is 5 litres

You added 1 litre of GTX-3 to the 4 litres of XYZ Oil already in the sump

4000km later the sump contains 4 litres of a mix of 20% GTX-3 and 80% XYZ

Add 1 litre of shell and you now have 20% Shell, 16% GTX-3 and 64% XYZ

So to say that with 20% GTX-3 it burns a litre in 4000km but with 16% it burns significantly less does not add up!

The engine takes 4 liters.

Put in Castrol GTX-3 and 4000km later the light came on.

Can´t remember the amout of oil came out after removing the rest of the Castrol.

Put in 4 liters, actually around 4.5 did change the oil filter, and changed the oil after doing 10000km, maybe 1/2 liter gone.

I can also tell you that Renault recomendes ELF, I did use this oil and did also consume more than normal, at 10000km 1 liter was gone, driving normal. On the second change had the kid sick at hospital and did a few km in short time period, at 10000km change almost 2 liters were gone.

When I lived in Canada was normal having car eating oil lovers, or most had the oil turn into grease and had to be scraped off the valve cover.

At the time Castrol was the top rated.
