Hi all. I am a mk1 owner, have a V6 tdi.

Considering upgrading (if you can call it that going from 6 to 4 cylinders!) to a Mk2 with the 170 PS diesel engine.

On Mk1 there were numerous major problems on the 2.0 tdi engine, and is best avoided.

My question is, were the 2.0 tdi problems resolved on the MK2, do we have any high milers on here with no issues with the 170 PS unit (or even the 140)? Any info is appreciated! At the moment I could probably get a half-decent trade-in value for my Elegance model and go up to a Mk2 with the power diesel, but don't want engine headaches! What's the rest of the car like?

At the moment I would be looking at a fairly high mileage 170PS potentially, as they are quite cheap at 100k or so.

PS: is the engine on mk2 east west or north south installation?

I had the 170 PD unit in the Octavia VRS (126000 miles) and have had two oil coolers, two injectors (@ £550 each to replace) and one head gasket :doh: .

EGR's are also prone to going too!

Loved the car for the first 100K then it started letting me down and costing money.

170 common rail should be a lot more reliable.

All the Superb 170's are common rail (CR) engines, the early (pre 2010) 140's are a PD, these also changed around May 2010 to CR.

With the MKII they turned the engine round so it is now transverse (or as you call it east-west)

The 2.0 TDi in the MK1 Superb is NOT the same as that used in the MK2.

I have a 170 elegance with 80k on the clock only problems I have had are an abs sensor fail and a wheel bearing. Engine is smooth as a babys bottom

Yes, based on the info I have picked up in various places I gathered that the MK1 Superb 2.0 tdi is vastly inferior to the later MK2 transverse unit, just wasn't sure if the oil pump failures have been sorted, but have thus far not picked up a single case of anyone claiming a pump failure in a transverse 2.0 tdi installation.

Any Dual Mass Flywheel problems, or DPF problems? Is there a "major" service to look out for? I know on some DPF equipped cars there is a 50-60k service where the DPF "liquid" tank needs to be topped up (this helps the particulate filter regenerate) and it costs 300-400 pounds. I presume the 170 PS does have a DPF?

I have seen some very nice Mk2 Superb's, 6 speed manual 170 PS common rail, 2009, 100k-ish miles for around 8 grand, so quite cheap, but obviously if things start costing thousands, then it's false economy! I have always been fan of fast accumulated motorway miles, those cars tend to be well maintained and in fact in very good nick as no baby poo and chocolate stains! And once the engine is hot, and just spinning, it hardly wears at all, so 50k miles a year no problems at all (provided it gets 3 services annually).

Greenline's fuel economy is enticing, but I am not sure if I could get accustomed to 100 PS again!

I also have a 170 elegance built on February 2009,with 105.000 km on clock,and had a turbo replacement on warranty(due to a faulty valve-common fault which was fixed in later models),a DPF differential pressure sensor fault(also fixed in later models by using a new part number sensor) which I had to discover myself because the dealers couldn't find it(cheers briskoda :thumbup: ),3 wheel bearings & 4 shock absorber bearings due to bad roads and 18" rims(later changed to 17").All these problems were in the first 20.000 km...doh,new generation,new problems.Now the engine in chipped since 60.000km.It runs excellent,it doesn't "consume" oil at all,never had a DPF MIL,and it is...fast :giggle: .And btw,here is no liquid(adblue) tank for the DPF.

Well tommorrow i am tradeing in my Octavia 140 L&K dsg IT HAS AT THE MOMENT 210508 MILES collecting an ex demo 11 plate superb SE PLUS ONLY PROBLEM IN ALL THOSE MILES WAS A TURBO WHICH DECIDED TO WHINE AFTER 160K cost around 1100 quid including Vat to replace and oh what a great deal on trade in.... B)

CR 170 in a 4x4, 40k on the clock from A/b roads mostly. One sensor on the pressure side of the dpf. Thanks RAC man!

So hopefully it will be ok for a few more miles based on the above.

Good thread. I've been contemplating what I get next, and 170ps 2.0 Superb will be it.

I've done the Octavia thing to death now (I've had 4 of them)
