Car myths?

Featured Replies

After reading around the forum I've found many things that have been mentioned...

lets get the facts right shall we?! :)

It's just a little true or false or what if thread, I'm gonna be out most of the day but it will be good to see what people think.

So...

Driving on an empty tank... will you get the sludge at the bottom? My theory would be because it's a bath tub like draining system it should never ever get slodgy right? :)

Redlining your car every now and then clears the injectors and takes any crap off the internals? I'm not so sure because the engine is always running at a high heat and RPM speed anyway?

never driving your car hard will make the engine weaker? - I find a mixture of driving will keep the engine on its toes, and not comfortable for it to break down?

umm I did have a few in my head but they've gone! I'll come back to it :)

Thanks,

Leon

I'm sure my Fabia does, you can hear it "spool up" when you turn the ignition on with less than half a tank of fuel in

Makes no sense. Your engine isn't always running at high RPM, think about that for a second. And by implication, the faster you run it, the hotter it's going to get. So yes, redlining your car gets some heat into it, and can help burn combustible deposits off.

never driving your car hard will make the engine weaker? - I find a mixture of driving will keep the engine on its toes, and not comfortable for it to break down? I don't know about this one, but never driving your car hard and then suddenly redlining it on VAG TDIs with variable turbos is almost definitely going to get you a ticket to limp mode. Not strictly a breakdown, but it sort of is :)

My take on it.

Empty Tank - Regardless of where the pump sits it goes through a fuel filter so shouldn't make a difference

Redlining - Definitely helps on TDI's as it rids the exhaust system of soot deposits so has also got to help the engine too.

Never driving car hard - see above.

Ebay resistor chips and electronic superchargers makes your car go faster

Plastic Brake caliper covers from flea bay with Brembo on them make you stop faster. Also those naff fake disc brake covers to go over the rear drums :giggle: :giggle:

In other words.......I'm just going to throw a nice big grenade into this room and then run like hell......then later on I might wander on by and take a look at the carnage :giggle:

"Lowering your car can make your mpg better".......(it does as it lowers the frontal area thus decreasing the drag coeficent...just look at all the eco versions (greenline or blueline) they almost all have lowered sports suspension!!! B)

They certainly do Fitz

Covered this a couple of times i think.

Letting your turbo charged engine idle for a minute or two before turning it off to allow the turbo to cool. Complete tosh if you ask me!

Mk 1 Fabia can't take anything built like a king.

haha!! yes lowering your car apparently does right?! but as soon as you put wider tyres, and bigger wheels you kill that idea right out!

As for the "spool" noise, isn't that the fuel pump getting diesel ready for the journey?

....who could forget the legendary 2.0 Fabia thread! haha :)

AC Cobra.

Depends how hard you have been driving it for the previous few miles,

Say your turbo is glowing, 900 degrees ish. Just how much heat do you think your going to lose in 60 seconds, remembering your still pumping hot gas around it under a hot bonnet next to a hot manifold with no air flow. And who ever has their turbo glowing pulling up to their house or work or has been driving hard enough to tesco to warrant a turbo timer? If you have, your a ****! (not you personally)

IIRC modern synthetic oils don't coke up either?

Audi R8 oil and water caps give you an extra 10bhp.........each

Retrofit DLR's look good.

Retrofit DLR's look good.

I was with you on this one until last night, car coming towards me that looked like a DS3 with vertical DRLs low down and set wide apart.

Turned out to be a late model MG ZR!

Volvo's are for old men. Total myth.

May have been true with metal tanks that start to rust but plastic ones?

Look at it this way - you spend your life breathing gently through your nose but every now and again you give it a good hard blow to clear it out (or a good broddle around with your index finger) :giggle:

Volvo's are for old men. Total myth.

Around 20 yrs ago when I was still riding around on 2 wheels the motorcycling community regarded Volvos as number 1 danger on the road - is that still true?! :giggle:

The most surprising omission from the list of myths? - Skoda make carp cars!

Nah it's the fuel pump priming, mk mk1 octy petrol does this too

It certainly used to be true, back in the days of bottom-drained tanks and LP lift pumps to carbs.

I was once in a hard-driven SAAB 99T which suffered ignition failure in the dark. When we stopped and threw the bonnet open, we could see the exhaust turbine glowing red. It faded in about a minute.

However, the point isn't so much to get the turbo cold, as to get it cool enough that it doesn't carbonise the oil that's around the turbo bearings.

Not true at all. My old lady has one. ;)

I was more curious to know if anyone can confirm whether a 2.0L petrol Fabia MarkI can blow the doors off of a Mustang? Easily? Just something I heard a while back. :D

Yes, but only if you drive like a king :giggle:

That is unless it has that little R badge on the back
