Am I correct in understand that VCDS Lite + A cable would not work as my car is 07?

The code reader you are looking at will only read engine fault codes and nothing else, from personel expeirience I think they are a waste of money for todays modern cars.

You are right that VCDS lite isn't suitable for your car as the diagnostic interface is Can-Bus.

The full version of Vcds at £265 may sound a lot but does everything, and if or when you decide to change your car, if you dont stay with a VAG car, the interface lead is very sellable on e bay and usualy bring slightly over £2oo.

So the true cost is only around £65.

Generic code readers are fine if you have the light on the dash, anything else its useless and you need decent software such as VCDS, i have a fairly good generic code reader but on my BMW it didnt show any faults so bought INPA (Bmw diagnostics) and had a shed load of issues regarding camshaft sensor, glowplugs and found out an injector was running wrongly.

Best all round diagnostic machine you can buy (personally) is the Launch X431 Master several thousand pounds though.

I bought a Maxiscan VAG405 which is OK, but doesn't read some of the controller modules - it might be worth having a look in the Diagnostics forum.
