Why delete the EGR?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Sorry to be thick, but on a diesel, why do people delete the EGR valve? What benefit does this have and are there any nasty consequences e.g. emissions testing?

Thanks,

Martin

EGR wikipedia

The EGR Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve returns exhaust gases through the engine for a second time for emmisions purposes (it reduces NOx), it also cools the engine as there is no oxygen present to burn. On diesel engines it contains soot which then sticks to any oil from the engine breathers and slowly blocks the inlet side of the engine.

Deleting the EGR prevents this build up.

I removed mine, as when you mix the exhaust gasses with the oily warm air from the crank case/rocker cover breather you end up with that lovely thick black "goo" in the EGR/anti-shudder assembly and into the inlet manifold... I kept the assembly and anti-shudder value though, some people fit a Millard Kit which removes this too (which is a bad idea, imho).
