Headunit Removal.... HELP!

Featured Replies

I start with an apology... I haw searched the forum but want so more help!

I can not get my head unit out :( I've brought tools of flea bay which are wrong and don't fit, halfrauds don't have the correct ones and I have tried the credit card cut up trick...

I need the head unit out and can't get it out- before anyone says... I don't have a hack saw blade :(

Try a friendly word with your local dealer. They may remove it for free.

If not, these are the right ones.

I use electric planer blades to remove these radios.

A bit like these, if you buy some get the cheapest you can find

and you want the 5.5mm ones.

I wrap one end in insulating tape because they are very sharp.

Failing that pop down to your stealer and ask them if they'll pop

it out. It takes just a few seconds to do so hopefully no charge.

(with proof of ownership of the car just to be certain, they may ask...)

Popping out may not take a few seconds though. Sometimes the tabs on the side of the head unit that the keys fit into don't come back in far enough, at that point even propper tools won't get it out. Struggled like mad before trying to get them out. End up taking all the surrounding trims off and being a bit rough.

Kenwood ones fit and work a treat

Mine was the same absolute pig to get out

Halfords had some kenwood ones that looked identical to those and they were too thick to fit into the hole. Mines a symphony unit if that makes any difference?

The trouble with the Kenwood keys is that they are too bendy.

I bent 2 beyond repair before I came up with the planer blade idea.

Try bending a planer blade  It'll snap long before it bends.

Lol how ham-fisted are you?

Very! I'm better suited to laying slabs,

knocking walls down and the like tbh.

Got the bloody thing out in the end though.

I already had planer blades in my toolbox.

I use an electric planer often when I'm fitting kitchens,

and hanging doors etc. :p

Mine was a right git to remove the first time out. Luckily it was an ICE dealer doing it and not me. We wanted to see the DIN/ISO setup and confirm it had a pre-out.

Best option is to use fairly tight tools to press through the key slots and to pull the tray and radio out at the same time. Reason I say use tightly fitting tools is so they maintain a bigger shove on the tabs. I've used old jigsaw blades, which are quite thick (wood/GP ones). If nervous, grind or file off any remaining teeth before use.

Also, for extra leverage, you can pop off the side trims and blanks and switchgear above the radio.

I have the same problem - My car is a Superb 1.8 Turbo, bought it in 2007

Symphony Mp3 (1 DIN) i got the two upper screws out, but then I am stuck - what do I do next? Are there only two screws to loosen?
