Could me moving form mk1 to mk2 section soon......

Featured Replies

Presently I am a mk1 Superb driver, owner of a 55 plate 2.5 TDi Elegance to be exact for the last 87k miles, I have always been very happy with it. I have been to the local Skoda agency this weekend and if the dealer can find me a 170 bhp 4x4 Elegance on a reasonable-ish delivery date, I will be 99% certain to swap the old one for the new motor. A few observations from me and a couple of questions to be going on with......

I think it looks like there has been a bit of cheese paring going on with the specification of the new Elegance compared with the old mk1 version that I have. The leather on the seats does not feel anything like the same high quality of the ones in my old car, the new car has no spare wheel, no heated rear seats, no carpet mats and apparently, I understand that the Columbus sat nav doesn't accept full UK post codes? This is 2011 for goodness sake!

On the plus side, the new car is stunningly good value for money and the 4x4 feature is a real bonus to have. I'm interested to hear from owners who have moved from a mk1 to a mk2 particularly if you have a 4x4, for example, how is the fuel consumption comparing between the mk1 and the mk2 versions?

Thanks, I just need to see what the dealership says tomorrow afternoon once he's had a look to see what he can do for me.

(Apologies about the typoes in the thread title too!)

as for all the things you mentioned the new car doesn't have, you can spec them, for a reasonable price. The postcode issue on the Columbus has been fixed with a software update. If yours comes with the old software (which it shouldn't), just go to the dealer, and they will updated FOC

Hope this helps :)

Thanks, I will be ordering the spare wheel and the mats, the other stuff I can live without just fine. Thanks for the info on the sat nav, that is good to know.

Having owned a MKI Superb Comfort PD130 I can answer some of your questions:

1/ The leather on the seats does not feel anything like the same high quality of the ones in my old car

Only the parts you touch are leather on the MKII, the sides and backs of the seats are not real leather.

2/ no spare wheel

Correct this was IIRC only £60 to spec it at the time of ordering, don't forget you also get the jack and tool kit with the wheel as they are not std either now.

3/ no heated rear seats

Option only now

4/ no carpet mats

Correct, whatever you do DO NOT buy the factory fit or dealer ones as they are a waste of money - there is MUCH better aftermarket one available (c/w the OE fixings) for less money.

5/ understand that the Columbus sat nav doesn't accept full UK post codes?

This was sorted 12 months ago, they now do full 7 digit postcodes

6/ how is the fuel consumption comparing between the mk1 and the mk2 versions?

On my PD130 the average was 50mpg - this was on the maxidot, so unlikely to be very accurate, my 170CR is returning an average of 44 - 45 mpg (actual figures) the maxidot used to read 49ish before I corrected the accuracy. (with VCDS) Obviously a 4x4 will be a bit thirstier than my 2WD.

You also loose as std little things like auto dimming rear view mirror.

Overall I loved my MKI, especially the PD lump, the 170CR for me was a bit of a let down in the way it produced the power, far to linear for my liking, others however prefer it this way :o.

Comfort wise you can't really compare the two as they are in different league  the only downside IMO is the twinhatch rear end is sooooo fugly  so for me it HAD to be an estate

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated. The maxidot consmuption on my 2.5 is spot on actually checked by brimming the tank. I'm hoping the 170 CR 4x4 will be about the same, consumption wise, as the 2.5. Thanks for the tip about the mats, I'll have a browse around to see what I can find on the web, trouble is, you can't see the quality before you buy that way. I agree, the hatch rear end is friggin' ugly!

I never actually did a true mpg check on the MKI so I am unsure if it was accurate or not??

I also forgot to say the 'carpet' quality (if you can call it that) is now pretty poor too, it's almost like a thick felt material, which IMO was a big let down from the MKI, but ATOETD if the main thing I can find fault with is the quality of the carpet then it's doing pretty well :giggle:

With some quality mats in though you will not see most of it

Cheers, seems there's (what looks like anyway) some fair quality tailored mats around on the web between about £30 and £50, probably give them a go if I hear positive news from the dealer tomorrow and go ahead with the swap.

the mats on this website are very nice. I have them in my Peugeot RCZ. I did go for the top quality, as i thought it was a reasonable price: http://www.cyberspares.co.uk/

Thanks, I'll take a look.

How come you fancy a 4x4 this time around? Also the 1.8TSi is a fair bit cheaper than the diesel and not bad on fuel at all, although doing 15k per year in the long run the diesel should pay for itself.

Thanks for the comment. I fancy a change and the 4x4 will certainly give me some reassurance if we get a repeat of the last two January and December snows. I haven't decided yet but I might get some steel wheels with winter tyres yet.

Regarding petrol v diesel, I haven't owned a petrol car since a 1988 jelly mould style Audi 80. I prefer diesel power. My annual mileage is unpredictable but varies between about 15 and 25k miles a year depending on where I am working (I'm freelance).

Dealership called me today and I should have a nice new 170 CR Elegance 4x4 on the drive in about three weeks time  .

Good choice for the new car, I've just put a deposit down on a two year old Elegance 170 4x4 to replace our Octavia. Amazing how engine tech has come on from the PD engine as the diesel is incredibly petrol like in its power delivery.

I haven't driven a 170 CR yet, be interesting to see how it feels versus my 2.5TDi V6 which has 160 ponies so about the same on paper.

I have a 130hp PD A3 and a 210hp CR Octavia.

The A3 surges forward and then runs out of gear at around 3500, repeating the trick more or less to around 85/90 mph at which point it keeps on going but with less surge.

The Octavia OTOH doesn't really surge, it pulls all the way from 1200 to 4500 and keeps going until I decide I'm going fast enough :)

I'd imagine your new car will feel slower but be the same, or slightly quicker, than your old one.

Well done!

Get some winter tyres for the Superb 4x4 and you can just laugh at the snow.

You really can!

Real-world fuel figures for my 170 4x4 estate are 42.6 mpg (in the past 3 or so Thousand miles)

It "can" do in excess of 50mpg with people and a boot full of stuff, but that's being very gentle indeed.

Thanks for the feedback, I suspect the mpg will be similar to my 2.5. I do drive really gently these days, I get about 42 to 45 on my daily commute (~24 miles each way) and up to 52mpg when on a motorway run. Very good figures considering the size of the car and more than the "official" mpg figures.
