Thirsty 55 plate 105bhp PD DSG

Featured Replies

Have just swapped my manual MK1 for MK2 1.9 dsg 105 PD engine This car appears to be drinking fuel. On short hops town driving mostly, you can nearly see the fuel gauge moving!! During normal acceleration the instant read out is showing 18 - 25 mpg. if I force shift the box up to 4 / 5 gears as soon as the DSG will let me, it reads around 30 and 35 or thereabouts, then in 6th whilst feathering the gas ever so gently it'll read 40-50

I have recently driven one 250 mile round trip 55 was the average

What should normal acceleration mpg be??

Thanks Col

I wouldn't worry to much about the instant mpg display, best way to check mpg is to do the brim to brim method.

Or if you want, change to trip computer 2 mode and see what mpg is showing.

Under hard acceleration up hill the instantaneous fuel consumption will be in single figures mpg. Not really sure what use the instantaneous readout is! When I am having fun in S mode my 1.8TSI has dropped as low as 2mpg. Cruising downhill it is often 150-200mpg.

Your average of 55mpg for a long trip sounds about right - my last Octavia was a manual 1.9TDI and that gave me 51mpg overall with 55-60 on a long motorway run.

Yep, best not to look at the instant readout! As said, it's a bit pointless...

Also, as mentioned calculate MPG from the brim-to-brim method. You could even get a pretty accurate idea by brimming the tank, zero'ing the trip and do 100 miles say of your usual journeys then top back up again, and see how many miles you've done for the amount of fuel used. Best is to do it over a whole tank, but either way you'll have a better idea of fuel consumption.

You will get as many answers as respondents. For what it's worth, on Saturday, I got 34mpg ,indicated, travelling across town via the dump to the superstore and back. About 7 miles.

I'd be unhappy with that if I did not get 51mpg overall.Reads as low as 19mpg at times climbing hills - so ignore the short term mpg readings.

I owned a 5 speed manual 1.9l Passat PD and got 44mpg overall- so 55mpg sounds good to me.

On a similar note I have a 1.9tdi 105 bhp. From returning good MPG 50ish, in the last 2 weeks has dropped to 25-30mpg. No change in mileage, routes or driving styles. Tyresinflated as they should be, no engine management lights, service history and no obvious signs of any fuel leaks...this has left me paranid and scratching my head. For example. Put £30's worth of diesel in the car Sunday night. Done my normal mileage (approx 60 miles), and now needs filling up again. Seems such an appreciable drop in performance. Any similar experiences or ideas?

When was it last serviced? And when was the air filter last changed?

December last year. On variable service, so long life oil etc and the air filter was changed. Coming up to 14000 miles in 11 months. I kind of assumed that its well within the expected levels. I'm thinking a damn good service wouldnt go a miss!!

A sudden drastic rise in fuel consumption could be fuel lines leaking, especially when under pressure, i.e. no tell-tale puddles under the car when the fuel pump is off.

Being a complete numpty when it comes to these things; is there any way of diagnosing? Or into a garage for them to have a good look?
