Monte wheels scuffed - fussy

Featured Replies

Just got winter tyres supplied by Mytyres fitted at local place recommended to me. Cost 57.60. Expensive? Checked alloys and everyone has faint scuffs from machine. One has a scratch. Am I being fussy or is this to be expected on black alloys?

Would think thats not acceptable. I have dark chromes and so far no scuffs, although have not taken them off yet.

Would complain.

Modern equipment should not touch the wheels if set up correctly. Contact is required for initial levering off but this can easily be sleeved to prevent damage.

I only use one tyre place that I've used to 20 years and he's never marked a single alloy.

Have steel wheels for winters as it saves worrying about changing tyres over and covering your alloys in salt all winter.

Take the wheels back and complain. Faint lines may polish out.

also make sure they don't over tighten the bolts, the locking nut should not ideally be tighten by an air gun, if so the torque on the air gun should be ajusted properly,

I am going to guess that most garages who use air guns set the torque at one setting and use it for all wheels regardless. they'll probably over tighten than under tighten so wheels dont come off but its not good for alloys in terms of damage

Tyre place I goto nip the wheel bolts with the air gun only then tighten them with torque wrench set to manufacturers settings.

He says the setable air guns are a bit crude and they have found them totaly unreliable.

Got my mate to look. He's a quality mechanic. He's not condemning the work. He thinks expensive but considering got tyres online possibly why. The marks have mostly t-cut out. The two small scratches are there and minor. Yes they shouldn't be so I might complain but my mate thinks I'm being fussy and on the same wheel there is a stone chip already. Worth bearing in mind. Black alloys. Very very easily marked. Doh! I'll sleep on it and look again. I think I'm more hacked off given price.

I had my winters tyres fitted to newly refurbed alloys & jokingly asked the fitter to be careful with them. He told me their machines don't even touch the wheels. Not a mark on the wheels after tyres fitted but I don't know how literally to take his statement.

Had my wheels recently replaced and have the black alloys. Was so worried I watched them take off the wheels etc using the machine. Not a scratch.

Taking the thread slightly off pace - do these black wheels scratch easily then ? Is it a fault ?

Reason I ask is coming from a Mazda RX8 the standard wheels looked great but were very poor, damaged easily, corroded after 24 months on some cars. Loads replaced under warranty. It appeared for whatever reason they were not sealed property in Japan and suffered badly in the UK climate.

Hopefully the Skoda wheels are not of something similar.....

Funny. I used to have Mk1 Fabia vrs. All alloys replaced after 30 months under warranty due to corrosion.

Spoke to tyre fitter. Really nice guy. Took me through process and they would not have touched the fronts. He agrees there are faint marks and said he was so careful. Thinks it may be due to rim protector on tyres being so close to rim it may have happened until fully blown up. I believe him. The rim protectors practically sit on rims.

Looking closely there are a lot of faint marks on the alloys not caused by fitter. So easily marked. I wonder how a winter will treat them. Thinking I should have got winter tyre and wheel set. I wonder how much 4 new genuine alloys would be to back on in spring and keep these for winter?
