Need help folks.. What is this part?!?

Featured Replies

Hi there,

Own a 2001 1.4 mpi and had the constantly reported coolant leak. took the cover off the top of the engine and saw the leak right away!! Standing in front of the car looking at the headlights, at the top right corner of the engine is a black casing/housing. Is this thermostat housing or water pump? The seal between this and my engine is the source of the leak.

Looking at the pictures, you can see (circled in red!) a red rubbery material that i assume someone has tried to use to seal it up previously. Is there a specific gasket i can get for this? and if so, whats it called?

Also, with a generic OBD scan tool i get the codes

p0140 - 02 Sensor Circuit No Activity Detected (Bank 1 Sensor 2)

and

p0141 - O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1, Sensor 2)

Do these suggest i should replace my post cat converter Lambda Sensor? and are the pre and post sensors the same fitment?

All your suggestions are hugley welcome and appreciated!!!!!

Thanks a million freelanderman!!!

the engine code is AQW. What is that housing for that the O ring is fitted to? Thermostat?

It's the thermostat. Part number for the standard o ring on the bag from the one I purchased states 047 121 666. The OE ones are specced at 30.2mm x 3mm. I fitted a 30mm x 3.5mm o ring, which seemed a better fit to me.

You may have a hard time getting the gunk off the thermostat and may need a new thermostat housing. As it is common for these to fail, yours may need replacing anyway. With the temp sender removed (and everything stone cold) put your finger in and see if the thermostat can be moved, if it can you need a new one.

I've never had any experience of the O2 sensors, but know from removing a fuse and putting it back in the wrong place (oops) that a dud fuse can bring up O2 sensor error codes.

Hi again, the lambda probe part number is 06A 906 262AJ, if you google the part number thier are plenty of suppliers available.
