Insurers finally support winter tyres

Some of you may find this of interest My link

I should think so too! Thanks for posting.

That's good news - never could understand some of the muddled attitudes towards something that can only improve safety and potentially reduce accidents ( and ergo insurers costs)

I spoke to my insurers, Privilege, about putting winter tyres on the Yeti - they seemed slightly nonplussed, and eventually told me "it's up to you what tyres you put on your car - as long as you don't change the wheels, we aren't interested". Which seems sensible.

I can confirm Churchill are fine with winter tyres - spoke to them about it today when arranging cover for my new snow monster - I just have to phone them when I change over and they will Note on the Policy, with no effect on Premium

Skoda aka Alliance are fine as well. Good to see insurance companies making sense for a change.

good news, though I did get annoyed last night when Radio Scotland interviewed a guy from the SMMT about the increasing popularity of 4x4s due to the winter weather we've had for the last few years. When asked about winter tyres he said "they can help a little bit but they are no substitute for having a 4x4". One of the presenters drives a BMW and asked whether winter tyres would help improve it in the snow and she was told that her best bet would be to buy one of the new BMWs as they have made significant improvements since last winter to address their poor performance in the snow.

Imagine that, BMW have revised their range to cope with a couple of British winters. If only the Germans ever got snow it might have happened years ago. :giggle:

I am wondering whether Motability will allow me to change to winter tyres?

As I need the car to get anywhere more than a short distance it is important to me that I can actually get out of the end of my road which is on a steep slope.

Harry did cope well last year on summers though.

I'm going to ring them later and find out.

Edit: just spoken to a nice lady at Motability and they have said YES but I would have to pay for them and ensure that, when the car is returned to them at the end of the contract, the normal tyres are fitted to it.

No problem as that ends in the summer.

Does it seem sensible?? Given that many people are changing their wheels from 17" alloy to 16" steels for the winter, it doesn't seem remotely sensible.

This would be much better suited to the relivent sub forum rather than restricting it to the few (minority?) who read the Yeti sub forum.

(pity I cant open the link ony phone though)

Don't worry. I'll stick a link on the relevant forum.

whaaaat? You mean non-yeti owners are also obsessed with winter tyres?

Yeah some of us are lol

Cross posting is frowned upon as you end up with mutiple threads and everyone gets confused

Oh I know - I didn't start the thread, agree totally with sharing info as widely as possible. Tyres are tyres no matter what car they're on

Yes! of course!!!........I hope that you as a sensible 4x4 (or pretend 4x4) driver have winters fitted???........otherwise I will put you in the same grouping as all the other 4x4 drivers on "summers" that I overtook/drove around/avoided, etc the past two winters!.......and that group of people I call a very unfriendly name!!! :giggle::rofl:

Chatline monkey at Direct Line couldn't be more obtuse when I phoned to see what their policy was. Indicated that it was specific to car/policy holder and I would get definitive answer when I phoned to confirm the wheels & tyres were on, but there would "probably" be no charge.

This is the first time I've come across them being so ackward.

Apologies just trying to be helpful.

Duly noted.

Thanx for all your hard work F5000

Aviva don't count this as a mod and their website states that there is no need to inform them and no affect on insurance.

I had winters on my Octavia and I have them on my Yeti - it's not a 4x4 though, I don't go off road in my own vehicle so not shelling out extra £££££ for a capability I don't need. Much better to have some nice Vredesteins.

A friend was telling me yesterday that his employer is buying a 4x4 to transport staff to and from work this winter. They rejected the idea of buying winter tyres as not being as good as a 4x4. Same advice was given out by the SMMT on Radio Scotland's evening news programme last week.

WHAT!!!!! :o

Was in my mates Nissan X-Trail big version??....last winter....he was boasting of it's 4x4 ability..........the pair of us ####ed ourselves when he nearly lost it on a bend as the diffs tried to play catch-up with the lack of traction..........I later took him down the same road in worst conditions at the same speed (slightly faster)......he got the idea that winter tyres are increadable on a Fabia!!!! :giggle:

Yup on drivetime on radio Scotland this pillock from the SMMT said winter tyres were of minimal benefit. He also said BMW drivers worried about performance in the snow should buy a new BMW rather than tyres as BMW have made radical improvements in response to last year's winter conditions in Scotland....aye right!

Sounds like the arsehole is on commission from BMW to sell new cars!

Couldn't find this on Aviva's website; perhaps I'm being thick! Can you point me to the page? I'd really like to avoid (yet another) call centre dose of "customer service" preceeded by lengthy periods of electronic music, assurances that my call is important....blah, blah, blah!

Just what I was thinking...

I Called Direct line, and they told me It was no problem at all, I just need to tell them when I put the new Steel wheels and Tyres on. Policy fee is unchanged.
