the fuel computer

Featured Replies

06 Fabia vRS - only had it 2 weeks,

The fuel computer says,

1. I averaged 62mpg over the last approx 1000 miles

2. I can do 700 miles to a tank

In reality, I did 474 miles using 41l which by my calculations is 52mpg.

Whilst not hugely disappointed with 52mpg, I find the over optimistic fuel computer a bit of a joke.

This is my first car with a fuel computer, are they all like this?

Yup, the black box is a lier  Most are out by a good 30% or more.

Use it as a guide, not gospel. Mine lies too. It says around 55 on average and my calcs have it around 46mpg.

I regulary get mine to say 74mpg on my work run, and have seen it say 79 if i'm uber careful. Reality is I get about 55mpg and 480ish miles per tank. Not disappointed but was well excited during my first tankful until I realised how far its out!!

Edit: Forgot to say, normal average says between 60-65mpg over the course of a tank.

I wasn't expecting it to be 100% accurate but for it to be so far out kinda makes it pointless IMO.

Once you know the tolerances, it does become useful. Get used to the norm, then taken any deviances away from that as good/bad as they come.

My Yeti one was out by about 10% which seems typical for the Octavia, Yeti & Superb diesels. Been corrected by VCDS.

I would love to get 55mpg

Supposedly it can be adjusted with VAGCOM but I haven't tried doing it yet. As with you, mine overreads a fair bit, not 30%, more like 7-8%, but considering these things are fuel pumps and injectors in one and can measure down to milligrams of fuel delivered, it's still a bit pants that the fuel calculation is the equivalent of licking your finger and holding it up to work out wind speed....

In my experiance it is way out. I've had 80 mpg + on a run a few times. The fuel range is not to be trusted either. I ran out before hitting 'Zero' despite running on 'Zero' for about 10 miles a few weeks earlier.

It's almost pointless IMO.

It's a gimmick, take no notice of it.

My first vRS - a 2004 post facelift one - had a reasonably accurate computer - usually about 3 mpg optimistic.

My 2007 vRS's one is approximately 22-25% optimistic.

I wondered whether the introduction of the BLT engine and the different ECU that that brought was responsible for the difference since it's most;y late models that are worst.

Contrary to what's been suggested I am advised that it cannot be adjusted via VAGCOM and my dealer advised that Skoda advise there literally isn't a solution!

It's just a toy to play with if girlfriend is late.LOL

I wouldn't trust it as far as I could throw the onboard computer for mpg, etc.

Tankful to tankful my 2005 Fabia VRS (ASZ engine), does 45mpg, or 10 miles per litre, computer tells me 58mpg??

So if its 30% out and mine normally reads a average of 38mpg

But is yours an earlier car? Is it BLT?

My 54 plate seems to be pretty accurate, calculated mpg from light to light over a fill-up seems to reflect what the computer tells me the average mpg was, maybe the newer BLT engined ones are less accurate, proof in fact that its not as good as it used to be...

According to this very forum the newer BLT engines put out closer to 150bhp than the claimed 130bhp - not a bad trade off for an over optimisitc fuel computer :giggle:
