Odd rough running on TDi

OK, I know I have a Roomy but its too quiet in that section. I have an odd issue with my 1.6 tdi 105bhp and was wondering if you Fabia diesel owners have experienced this?

On a couple of occasions from cold the car has kangarooed a little, I can drive through it fine and then up the road about a mile its a little hesitant and on a couple of occasions when coming off throttle and on again its run very roughly, again I can drive through it. Today, it was a little hesitant again after about a half a mile drive. Its done over 4000 miles now, and only started this recently.

Ive mentioned it to the dealer, who carried out a diagnostics which says everything is good. They suggest it could be DPF regens but why after all this mileage? Im not convinced thats the issue, any ideas please?

Bit of an update, a pattern has developed and after the rough running it appears to be doing a regen on the DPF. It does this around every 100 miles and has only started doing this since around 3500 miles which is odd. Economy is now down on what it was too. Ive never once had a DPF light on, but this car has the latest software and that apparently stops the issue with regens, so it seems the cr is normal!

Have to say, for the first 3500 miles it was superb with good economy and performance. Now its apparently normal Im a bit dissapointed as kangarooing and rough running along with reduced MPG isnt great, oh well modern diesels eh!

Hi mate, does your motor get a good run and from time to time do you give it a good blast to keep everything clean and dandy inside the engine and exhaust? The 1.6cr is quite lightly stressed and doesn't really work hard at anytime unless you really give is some now and again. Economy type driving is great but it does lead to a build up of unburned hydrocarbons and other crud in the cylinders and exhaust/filter etc over time. You don't have to go mad but keeping sustained high speed and taking the revs up beyond where you normally have them is needed to heat everything up nicely, otherwise your exhaust/mixture settings don't respond as quickly as your ecu wants them too and you get a slight throttle lag when going off and on the throttle. Quite common in many vehicles not just Skoda engined ones. You prolly know all that though.

Thanks for that, thinking about it I am not doing many long runs now as the stuff we do has finished for the winter and am mainly using the car for work. It doesnt really get thrashed on that trip and can sometimes be stop start traffic too. Id have thought the light should have come on though. Maybe thats it then?

I do have an alternative route to work via a long dual carriageway... maybe once a week its worth doing that and just burn extra fuel!

Yeah...that's a good idea to make a longer run to work so you can give it some work to do, or just pop out for an extra trip now and again. Any extra trips or mileage done won't negate your benefit of owning a diesel as you get massive extra mpg over an equivalent petrol car anyway and you may well find your mpg improving afterwards. You won't get a dash light on this problem usually either not until it becomes very bad, but some of the sensors in the exhaust manifold area and cat/dpf can become a little dirty over time and send the wrong signals to the ecu. Same happens in petrol cars that are used for short trips too, although it takes longer for that to happen in a petrol engined car. You may want to consider using a dpf friendly injector cleaner too at least once a year. This makes a big difference and will keep your injectors nice and new and the inside of the engine clean. These cleaners are proven to work. However you drive a modern engine you always get a build up of residue on and in the injectors and in the fuel system that needs to be removed. Well, Ive been driving it harder on my commute and today it did this daft hesitancy stuff again but no active regen. Ive noticed that over the last two weeks my fuel economy has dropped by around 5mpg too. Now thats weird as its been great so far. Im tempted to say maybe I should have bought a TSI but then Id never get 55mpg on the motorway would I? :giggle:

Don't forget Lemon that we now have winter diesel in the system. This has a very slightly lower calorific value so less miles per gallon. So with the lower temps that are starting to creep in you will get fewer miles per gallon. Down by about 5-6 miles per gallon is about right, but maybe even more when the really freezing weather comes. The petrol engine boys will also start to notice this effect to as they start to take on board winter petrol. The extra starting sniffers in it tend to lower the fuel consumption slightly and what with the longer warm ups with pumps on full advance it does have an effect on them too. You will get less regens if you drive it a bit harder as once the system is clear is keeps the DPF much cleaner.
