Lowering the beast question

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Had my car remapped this week and well impressed. Only problem now is the handelling is like previously stated, 'a canal boat'.

Probably going to put at decent set of eibach springs.

If im fully award there is no adjustments to be made to the camber or tracking is there if I just put some springs on the old girl? Obviously keeping the original shocks. They should be ok for another few miles.

Apex or eibach. Which would you guys go for?

No camber but tracking will defo need doing. Personally i would buy a decent set of coilys otherwise youll have a knackered set of dampers in no time.

I would like to know why people think that standard OEM shocks with uprated springs are a bad idea. People think that it will shorten there life expectancy.

At the end on of the day a damper is a damper and it damps out the oscillating motion caused by the spring - as long as you aren't bottoming or topping out the damper I cant see having issues with the damper units failing? Other than old age and general wear and tear.

Uprated springs will not cause as much ossilation as a standard spring, so really the shocks should last longer.

Bouncy bouncy lol. That's my experience of springs

F**k me we have a comedian in the house

The bottoming and topping out is the reason. Matched dampers will have a shorter travel to accommodate the lowered spring.

Eibach do state

'Though the Eibach Pro-Kit and Sportline lowering springs are designed to perform well in conjunction with factory O.E.M standard dampers.'

I also read somewhere that if you trim a bit off the bumpstops it also helps Smooth out the damper actions when bottoming out and topping out. I'm going to fit the Eibach pro kit I have in the spring. The springs are specifically designed by Eibach for use with Oem shocks they will be fine.

I ran my first vRS with Eibachs and standard dampers, was ok. Different world when adding Koni dampers after though.

Bottoming out the damper is not really the main issue, It's more to do with the damping and rebound rates, a lower spring gives less damper travel so you need to have the same amount of damping resistance over a shorter travelled distance. Likewise you need a reduced rebound rate to compensate for the stiffer spring.. personally I would say that buying matched damper and spring set is more beneficial to the handling.

Edit: you may be able to 'get away' with not adjusting the tracking but I wouldn't recommend it. Obviously with any type of lowering on a Macpherson type setup the natural side effect is to have more negative camber, this in turn causes there to be more toe in on the front wheel tracking which is caused by the slight change in steering angles.. Think of it like this if the wheel hub is say 40mm closer to the centre line of the steering rack then the track rods will have been made theoretically longer because they are now flatter so the wheels will toe in.. But I daresay if you are only lowering by a small amount the effects are negligible.

Depends who does the labour IMO. You might as well get a set of coilovers, thus refreshing both springs and dampers. Maybe try selling the originals on eBay?

You still NEED a RARB though. ;)

You'll get a better ride quality if you cahnge the dampers as well but the Eibach Pro springs do seem to work we;; with the standard dampers.

As mentioned trim the bump stop and this should help.

Damian @ DPM Performance

To do it right get set of eibach and good set of dumpers. Get 4 wheel alignment (despite no adjustment) to set tracking right in relation to camber. That way you can tune your suspension and get the most of it. Do it smart - not cheap... otherwise you wil be paying twice.

The dampers have a life span

Anything after 60k , dampers will be done in

If you are looking at a vehicle at around that point , you may as well do the dampers at the same time

As has been mentioned , coilovers may be good , but what ever you do , DO NOT GO CHEAP , cos you will regret it

The AP coilovers was a good inbetween for quality and price , made for KW so good background company ;)

As has been siad , trim the bumpstop too

Just cut a nogging off the top

Also has been said " DO A REAR ARB".......they are just uber cool :)

thats because they are progressive and designed to work with oem dampers

springs on standard shocks should stick to corsa's etc
