Greenline mootorway useability

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am in the process of ordering a new Greenline. I had a test drive on Friday and I thought that the performance of the car felt more than adequate on the single carriageway road that I drove it on. I was doing a bit more research on another forum today and found a thread where someone said that the 1.6 TD engine ran out of puff after 60 mph and made merging and overtaking on a motorway tricky. I didn't have the opportunity to try the car out on a motorway and now I'm starting to wonder if I should have gone for the 140 bhp 2 litre instead (it costs 1,600 euro extra and I'd prefer not to have to spend the extra unless its going to make the difference between loving and hating the car).

Does anyone regularly use their Greenline on motorways and are they happy with its performance when merging and overtaking?

Hi I can't comment on the 1.6TD but I have the 1.9TD Greenline, and it certainly doesn't run out of puff at 60mph! The gearing is longer than standard and you may need to drop into 4th occasionally to overtake if you need serious speed, but I have had no problems with mine on both UK and Continental motorways when overtaking, even fully laden. I wouldn't have thought the 1.6 is that much different with similar output figures to the 1.9.

Don't have greenline, but have 1.6CR in S trim, plus cruise control. Wouldnt want to race a 170bhp, but no problem keeping up with traffic even with four up plus roofbox.

Gearing is well spaced and 5th for me is 40-45mph then smooth acceleration to legal limit. Good acceleration inthird and fourth gears

Sure you will be happy with 1 6 engine.

It would be helpful if we knew what model you were taliking about! I'm guessing from the previous posts that it's a Superb?

Since he posted in the Superb II forum I'd say your wild guess is pretty much spot on :giggle:

Had a greenline estate as a rental for a week on top of a test drive before ordering.

There was no issue on the motorway including some quite significant climbs at 130kph, but it was only one up. Getting to a two lane section behind a truck going at 100kph, no real issue to squeeze on the gas and go.

The only time I found it struggling was in some moments at a roundabout; approaching you are preparing to stop but looking to go, as you get to the line, there is a clear gap in the circuit so you plant it. To get the instant go you have to be in exactly the correct gear, whereas in such vehicles with large unstressed engines, eg Volvo D5, you just plant it and go, almost regardless of gear. If you are in too high a gear in the Greenline when you press the pedal there is a pause while it gathers pace rather than accelerates, and then it kicks in and goes. Hope I've explained it OK.

In the end it was easy to adjust the driving style to avoid and I've ordered a Greenline Estate.

Thanks for your responses - I feel a lot happier about my choice now. Mostly it'll be lightly loaded so it sounds like it'll be just fine.

Now all I have to do is decide on a colour...

I have never driven a Greenline. All I know is that the effortless waftability of my 2.0 140 makes it a pleasure to drive. In fact it goes so well I do wonder if they have fitted a 170 engine. A slight flex on my big toe will see me past anything; and this is while I am still running in and changing up before 3,000 RPM.

Coming from a remapped Superb 1.9Tdi, my 1,6Tdi Greenline Combi is slower in the overtaking stakes and can't be trickled out of junctions as easily in third or fourth gear, however, the tradeoff is lower emissions, a quieter engine, better fuel economy and less body roll (courtesy of lowered suspension).

I generally drive alone and can confirm that on motorways in fifth gear, there is quote enough grunt to enable an increase from 60-70+mph without having to drop down a gear, as was the case in the similiary engined Passat equipped with a six speed gearbox I test drove before deciding on a Superb Greenline.

Personally, I love my Steel Grey Superb which looks very businesslike, yet more interesting than silver or black.

I had my doubts regarding the performance of SuperB Greenline so I purchased a CRD-Tuning box in advance:

They don't have a tuning kit for SuperB 1.6CR Tdi on their website but they have it on their E-bay website. So I made some E-bay shopping and received the tuning box about 1 week before the delivery of my car. Installed it and now the car is much more...hmm..lively/lovely to drive :)

There are many Tuning Box dealers/manufacturers and their prices will vary from 59€ to 599€. So if you'd like to spice up your Greenline a bit, do some investigation/comparison and you'll find the tuning box for your needs. Or in any doubts, just keep it original :wall:

Thanks - that's an interesting option. The Passat 1.6 TDi produces 132 bhp & 319 NM which sounds like a useful boost in power for 89 euro. I'll definitely keep it in mind.

Having driven all of them bar the 1.4TSi, I find the Greenline absolutely fine. I would personally prefer the extra cost of fueling a 170 but if I could have a Superb Greenline or no Superb at all, I wouldn't grumble.

Could do with some more details as I'm thinking of this for next octy vRS 170 CR.

Does it work ok, any probs etc and is it an easy fit, also do you get the power increase they advertise?

Sorry for all the questions but at 89 euro for 40 more horses and 65 more nm torque it seems a bargain!

My credit card is fighting to get out of my wallet!!

You could also go for the 2ltr 110 bhp instead of the 140bhp

Yes, it should produce the same for SuperB 1.6 TDi. That's why I purchased the kit. And so far it has worked just fine. But of course it won't remove the physical limitations of 1.6 TDi setup, i.e. turbo lag below ~1800 rpm. But in my opinion it was well spent 89€.

Like I wrote, so far it has worked just fine. And it's removable unlike remapping of an ECU box.

I haven't dynoed my car so I don't know whether their promises will be kept but the car itself feels a lot better (better torque, acceleration etc.) with that tuning box. It was really an easy fit and removable if you're taking your car to a Skoda service garage.

I came up with the idea of purchasing that tuning box because of the CO2 limitations of our company cars. So I had to choose Greenline. Well, I thought I might as well order a Greenline with so many optional equipment as I could and spice it up with that tuning box. And I did B)

Cheers - we don't have the 110 bhp Superb, just the Yeti I think. The 140 bhp 2 litre is nearly 2,000 euro more expensive than the Greenline here and I reckon that seeing as the feedback on the Greenline is positive that I'll be happy with it.
