thoughts on the STS

Hi guys,

I've got a silver fabia vrs currently standard. I might look at an sts for a remap however what do people think of them?

Do you get the specified power output bhp?

Are they reliable as for not having engine problems after?

Is there a noticeable difference after?

Cheers,

Oli

if you mean a map from forum sponsors Shark Performance with their STS box so you do not need to travel to them then it would be a good choice and there is plenty of feedback from many happy people such as myself :)

in answer to your questions the easy answer is a big yes

its not always that simple though.

mine has not been on a dyno so I cant confirm if the numbers match but others have and they did. each engine is different and I believe there is variation of about 5% which you can confirm on Sharks site as I am sure they state it.

reliability after a map is also a tricky one and I would say that ignoring where you get a map you do need to realise that the engine and other parts of the car will be under more stress if you add more power - simple as that.

a bad map can cause specific problems with, for example the clutch, if the power delivery is not done correctly however with a reputable company like Shark you dont have that problem.

personally I have had my head gasket go - was that the maps "fault"?

no chance!

I have no doubt it was already a problem most likely from assembly at the factory but it may not have happened as soon without the map though it would have failed at some point either way.

if there is a fault or weakness in the engine then adding a chunk of power will put it under stress and bring out the fault sooner. go into mapping with your eyes open though

is there a noticable difference - not half! :p

much more eager to rev, pulls hard all the way to the red line rather than falling off after 3K, much more power and better power delivery and better fuel economy thown in as well. :giggle:

hope this helps

Thanks! Yeah it does help, would you feel the car is around the 160/170bhp mark? I know it's probs not easy to tell. I have not rang up shark on prices, however i couldnt really get to grips on the pricing on the website, is the STS the same kind of price as going there to get the map done? around £299?

If you buy at the right time (sale), you effectively get the STS for free. Otherwise it is £150 on top of the remap.

I did it, and would recommend to anyone. Doe it produce 170bhp? I don;t care: The difference to how the engine performs is night and day, smooth delivery of go all the way to the redline, rather than a lump down low.

Do it.

Thanks, you mean like a group buy yeah? So if I were to buy a remap, I would pay £299 for remap then get a free STS? Does this mean basically I pay £299, they would send me the STS and remap data and then I install it on? Or I get a remap done at Shark performance and recieve a free STS which I can then use to take the remap off or put it back on again? But I can store the remap data to use on different vrs?

To clarify on the pricing, the remap is £299 including VAT and the STS is £150 including VAT. You can have a remap done by us or one of our dealers for £299, but if you would like the STS then you need to buy the remap at £299 and the STS in addition to it.

Total price delivered is £456.99 including VAT.

Hope that helps

Ah brilliant makes sense to me now thanks :)

I noticed on a group by you can either have the free STS or a percentage off the remap.. Could you get the remap done at Shark, and with the free STS load the remap from the car onto the STS so you have that remap if you ever wanted to put it back to standard? but still have the remap data stored?

To my knowledge there are no offers on at Shark at the moment, except for a free dyno run if you pay before Christmas.

However a group buy or free STS's would be good wouldn't it! (hint hint) :p

I would be in for a group buy STS. Maybe someone should start a thread to get some numbers on who would be interested. That way if the numbers are good Shark can look to see if it's worth it for them.

Those of you thinking of an STS, book today before 1pm and you can basically get the STS free (i.e. £150 off the map, which will cover the charge for the STS unit)

Thanks very much for this. The £150 off swayed me, and I've treated myself to an xmas present. If this forum had rep, I'd give you green.

So I was wrong! A special offer came today! Some great savings to be made! How many people took advantage of it?

Only about three that I know of, Slamby above for the discount to cover the cost of an STS unit and a couple of local (to me) people who I think are just going for cheap (but good) remaps at £150 at the workshop (so half price). Thankfully already got mine done at a discount on the open day back in summer :)

I was waiting for an offer to pop up again, as am patient and tight enough to not pay full price. Didn't think it's be so soon though! Wouldn't have spotted it at all if not for your link. Fairly small window of opportunity to take advantage, but hope other people did, as £150 for a Shark map is a bargain! I opted to see it as a "free" STS, as it'll be better and easier for me, as not sure when I'd be able to get it done at the workshop.

How do you find the mapped car to standard? Big difference?

Yeah, on the Fabia maps it's basically the same price as the group buy they did over the summer (£150 map plus £150 for STS, rather than £300 map with free STS but the same overall).

I've never driven a standard Fabia as I bought mine pretty well modified and with a hybrid turbo, but going from a standard car to a mapped car is brilliant. I went from a standard PD150 in my old Leon to a P-Torque map and it was great, more power which lasted longer, and it killed a couple of flatspots that I used to notice on the stock map. And Shark definitely know their stuff, my Fabia used to run an Awesome GTI map which was OK but very smoky and very peaky, the Shark one made the same peak power but with a safe level of torque, much smoother, and much less smoke. You'll be in good hands with Ben and Mikko :)
