DIY DECAT IDEA?

Featured Replies

I'm on a posting mission at the moment :D

Me and mate (who is a land rover mechanic) was talking about decatting my vRS, there are new regulations that have come in for the MOT's that say if the car was manufactured with a 'CAT' then the CAT should still be present when the MOT is carried out..

So.. We had an idea...

Take off the exhaust, remove the CAT from the back box then weild the top of the backbox back on. Then you put the exhaust back on and you can't tell that the CAT has been removed..

Obviously the weilding wouldn't be visible because it would be on the opposite side when you look under the car.

Good idea or Not good idea, what are you thoughts?

Cheers

I'm 99% sure there's only one cat, and it isn't in the backbox, it's in the downpipe. In theory your idea would work though, at least until such time they're expected to verify diesel emissions rather than just a visual check for a cat.

Smash the inside of the cat out (is it honeycomb stuff or wire in the pd130?) or get a fake empty cat box welded onto a decat pipe :)

I like that idea :)

is the gains for a decat any good?

is the gains for a decat any good?

For the environment .... quite the opposite!

lol,

any noticeable power gains?

Helps the turbo spool up quicker but heard it can cause over spooling of a vnt turbo unless mapped to suit and prevent this, however I could be wrong!

Most definitely. decat removes a large amount of back pressure. This is more pronounced the larger the piping bore. Faster spool ups for turbos and the like.
