Can anyone help with a switched power source I can use that only comes on when I switch side lights on? I am thinking of installing some ambient lighting

I used one of the empty slots in the fuse box. Just push a spade connector into one and try it out. The first one I tried was a permanent live, the second one was switched. Can't remember which number it was but i can check for you in the morning if you want?

I don't think there is a side-light switched source that you'd be able to get to easily. The only thing I can think of would be to come of the backside of the fuse for the sidelights, but that would be a 'fuse box out' kinda job.

Anything relayed from the back of the sidelights themselves might confuse the diagnostic. (If it covers the sidelights)

I think the problem is that sidelights are just sidelights, there's no 'add-on' to them further up the food-chain. (If that makes sense)

..........however maybe something relayed off the dashboard lighting might do the trick, maybe even off the back of the light-switch itself
