3rd gear crunch

Featured Replies

hi all i have had a quick look at past topics but cant seem to find anything that relates exactly to my problem.

I have a fabia 1.2 on a 05 plate only done 51k. A few weeks back it was getting more and more difficult to engage 3rd and 4th gear so i got out my trusty haynes (aka the idiots guide to being an idiot) and had a go at adjusting the cables. Needless to say i compleatly buggered it up and ended up having to get a friend to sort it. He was at work so could only do a quick job it was fine for a few weeks now 75% of the time when i try to get into 3rd it grinds. if i accelerate hard in 3rd there is a vibration on the gear leaver as well. Some times there is a definate click on engageing 4th and 5th although that is randome and rare. reverse is a little sticky and 1st sometimes jumps back out if im not too carefull with it.

I have taken it to a garage that i trust and they say i need a new box tht it wont be the linkages that cause that.

i fail to see how all this could of been caused in a matter of weeks rather than a slow degrade and only after i tampered with the linkages.

the question is do i try and get someone to adjust the linkages again or try and refurb my own box or by a reconditioned one.

If i go down the route of trying to repair my own box do i eed any specalist tools???

thanks in advance

It sounds a bit like worn dogbone or console bushes to me.

ok price check time.... i called round all the local breakers and no-one had a fabia let alone a gearbox. went onto a online search and had three prices back ranging from 300 to 510 i thought that was a little steep and was expecting to pay around the 100 quid mark. Are the prices fair or are they trying to rip me off
