MFD adjustment for winter tyres..

Featured Replies

yup its in the "options" on the MFD, while stationary, ignition on and no engine, press and hold the end selector, then choose setup, then winter tyres and you can choose to +/- 5 mph... mine is reading exact, but I know at least someone on here has a RR of greater than 5% so here you can set your speedo wight :) just calibrate it with GPS first, and if its -5mph, go on the NFD and click +5mph, and then use GPS again to check

*wants points for finding this nifty little feature...

You want points for wrong information?!

As per the owners manual (page 24?), the +/-5mph setting you mention is not an adjustment to the speedometer accuracy. Its to enable you to set a warning to remind you that you have lower speed rated tyres fitted (ie winter tyres)

Quote from the manual....

Winter tyres

Here you can set at which speed a warning signal should sound. This function is used

for e.g winter tyres with the permissible maximum speed less than the maximum

speed of the vehicle.

When exceeding the speed, the following is displayed on the information display*:

Snow tyres max. speed ... km/h (Winter tyres maximum ... km/h)

Yes sorry as above, it is just to set a speed warning to indicate that you may have lower speed rated winter tyres fitted

PMSL... ok, if I'm wrong ;) I havent read the manual with it :giggle: but I dont understand how it can be max speed? you have a seperate speed warning indicator you can set at any speed! so that would make this feature pointless... secondly, there isn't 5 mph difference between peed ratings! H=130mph v=150mph W=168mph... (the lower letters are also spaced much higher than 5 mph intervals) so how can it possibly be for different speed ratings? thirdly you should never EVER go below the speed rating reccomended for your car, even on winters (mine are V) its dangerous. fourthly .. really ? 150mph+ in winter conditions, and 145 would be ok, on 130mph rated tyres? (I'm talking H vs V, with relavance to the mark II vRS)

anyone have any other suggestions? I'm not saying that isn't whats in the manual... maybe its a mistake in translation?

*heads off to the shops, knows his speedo reads + 1 mph consistantly on current tyres with GPS, so goes for a test at +5mph on the MFD.... *not gonna eat his hat if he's wrong! lol....

Thats what its for. Im not saying it doesnt have any flaws! I guess the idea being that if you have fitted H rated tyres you increase the warning to 130MPH, should you approach that speed then car will warn you. Its maybe seperate to the other speed warnings, so that for example you can still have a 50MPH limit set? (ie for roadworks or whatever)

As a side note though - I've changed from 18" V to 16" H rated tyres on my VRS. How is that dangerous if you dont exceed 130MPH? Mine has never been over 100MPH so I have no concerns that what I have done is dangerous. My insurance company have no issues with it either.

I eat my hat... you guys are of course right ;)

As regards the speed rating, I'm sure you will be fine, I doubt any "track days" will be happening in winter... but as far as I recall (there was a test done way back in a renault 19 16v) the max speed is determined by how the tyre handles heat, and how it disperses heat, the higher the rating the higher speed it can handle... but it can also mean it has different handling "characteristics" which can mess up the feel of the car, or overheat them (on a track day for example, or fast backroad driving) and they go pop , even if you dont approach max speed.. just due to how they handle heat.. and what sort of car they are fitted to, i.e what sort of forces it can put through its tyres... the mark I vRS for example was fitted with W rated tyres, but it couldn't reach over 150mph...(v's)

again, this is an extream test, i doubt you will be in any trouble if your insurance company are happy for you to have H rated tyres and you arn't going on the track

happy winter mototring!

*gutted he didnt find a cool feature, and slaps skoda for missing a chance!

VAG fit all models with highline display with the ability to set a speed warning for winter tyres. Probably due to a requirement in parts of Germany to fit winter tyres and unrestricted Autobahns.

As you can only do 70mph in the UK any speed rated winter tyres without studs or chains will be well above the fastest you can legally go. Makes the winter tyre speed warning a bit pointless. If you are doing 130mph on winter tyres you are going to prison anyway.

I can't say I'm looking forward to the winter with fwd 180bhp and dsg :(

That explains it!!!!....Logical.........as at first WTF? is the point of a + or - 5mph limit at max speed.....I thought it would have been a limit (lower) for the cruise control or like the OP to take into account the RC difference of a wrong size winter tyre!!.......what does SUK say???.....hang on isn't there a dealer on the site??......ALLUMS??????

Well skoda as would everyone else assume you would be fitting the correct tyre in the first place so there should never be any need to change the speedo.
