Grooved and Dimpled MTEC discs for Fab vRS

Featured Replies

Totally pointless.

Get OEM disks.

Do you ever get fade on the road? If not then get OEM Pagid pads from places like ECP.

If you do get fade then the best, but expensive pads are Ferodo DS2500.

Drilled discs have invariably been known start to crack at the holes under consistent heavy load. And for the money, definitely not worth it.

Grooved discs maybe, but drilled is just not worth the associated risk of losing a break disc mid-breaking.

Edit: cheers for pointing out my typing fail Gizmo68! ;)

For road use they are a waste of money OE spec will be more than good enough

Expensive pads that are effectively a liability

How do you work that one out? Mintex pads are a very good quality pad.

My bad - I meant discs!

Updated

AS above....stay away from cross-drilled discs.....I use EBC Greenstuff pads (you might neeed their Redstuff) and their grooved and dimpled (not thro drilled) discs both front and rear....very good.....mind you I need them on these back roads...also have Goodrigde S/S braided hoses and EBC brake fluid as well! Totally unnecessary to use any disk other than OEM.

I'm surprised you have good experiances of GreenStuff because my Fabia came with them on and I could fade them in literally 5 minutes on a country lane. On a bypass they probably had about 4 hard stops in them from 80 before giving up.

I've had stones stick betwwen the pad and the disc and then embed themselves into the pad and badly score the disc....this is why after about 2yrs of having any new car I swap the discs for grooved as this doesn't happen! Have tried Tarox in past and various pad manufacturers...jus found for me that the EBC stuff works fine....their new discs only have 3 grooves but more dimples and are better than the older design....i know having had both! I'm not a fan of Greenstuff pads, 5 out of the 8 on mine had de-laminated, I replaced them with OE discs and pads.

The car stops extremely well now!

Makes me wish I'd stuck with OE when the 312's went on!

Thanks for the advice.

I normally get my bits from www.vwspares.co.uk and the full rear and front OEM discs and pads come in at around £150 so the MTEC ones with Mintex above where cheaper which was why I was considering them. I've heard horror stories about the drilled ones cracking too today in work so was going to steer clear there...

The grooved ones look tarty though which I like! B)

I've got these Mtec drilled and grooved discs on my vrs as have a few others.

They need replacing soon as they have been on about 2 1/2 years and have a bit of a lip on them but there is no cracks whatsoever round the drilled holes and still give very good breaking.

I'd buy them again and recommend them to anyone.

Easy rule of thumb for this issue.

What did the manufacturer fit, after extensive testing?

So if you move away from OEM, the brakes can only be better, or worse. Drilled/Dimpled/grooved discs are meant for track use only, and Pro-Racers change them after every race. If you have ever seen a cracked drilled disc shatter at speed, nobody would fit them to a road car. It's like hand grenade shrapnel, that can tear through brake lines, go through the wheel arch and out of the wing. If part of the disc stays on the hub, the pad catches the broken edge, and destroys the caliper.

Rear discs as usual will rust away as very little braking at the rear takes place.

I may consider doing the fronts perhaps, but as said brake efficiency good with the original type discs and pads when fitted.

So save your hard-earned cash, and put towards your next service/ parts required.

I got them. I don't know if I would trust them though under track days or driving like a loon everyday, but for everyday normal use with the occasional spirited use they seem fine. Had them on a year know with no issues. They do stop you better than oem but that's probably down to the mintex pads.

I've also got them, I read reviews about the squealing they make, mine really do, I've had them on over a year and had no other problems no cracking, I wouldn't read into the horror story's about cracking ect to much as the firm have a good rep on eBay, will they improve your braking? No but they look mean behind a decent set of alloys.
