Brake disk grumble

Featured Replies

Local dealer has just 'advised'that my 06 reg Octie 4+4 has all discs pitted and 'suggested' replacement at £425 inc.pads. In my younger days when men were men, brake drums were still there when the rest of the car had rotted away! Could this be due to the use of crap metal to increase spares sales or am I expecting too much?

Check how much meat you've got left on the pads to be sure, then take the car out and give it a series of proper emergency stops from a decent speed, 40+, somewhere safe and quiet ofc.

Then recheck them. Chances are they'll look a lot better.

Although to be fair after 5yrs they could well need doing. Mine's the same age and I'll be swapping a full set of discs and pads all round as soon as I get a spare weekend.

VAG discs are rumoured to be more susceptible to corrosion, quite a few threads on here about it.

I agree with above, 5 years out of a set of discs is reasonable, that's only two, maybe three sets over the cars entire life.

Try replacing with a high quality non OEM brand instead?

They might need doing or it could just be the dealer fishing for business by suggesting unnecessary work. If you needed to change the pads anyway then it might make sense to do the discs at the same time but otherwise I would personally wait until I had a problem with the brakes and then mend them.

Why not book it into Kwik Fit or the like for a free brake check and get a second opinion, at least you will know if you are being sold down the river by the dealer .

£425 is a lot of money for discs and pads, personnally I bought my last set of brakes online and then had them fitted at Shark Performance as i was upgrading to a VRS set up. You should be able to get discs and pads sub £200 delivered the next day and then get them fitted by a local garage, saving yourself a fair chunk of money. I used a company called Auto Performance Online, ordered at 0900 and had them delivered by 1400 the next day, front brembo discs/pads and rear pads for £130 delivered.

Eurocarparts do them yourself mate.

We might be biased, but I would suggest going for Pagid pads and discs (OE supplier to VAG) and the discs will have the rust free coating (looks great through the alloy spokes) and with the forum discount I'm sure would be sub £200 :D
