Hi this might be asked before but cant find a post for it. I drive fabia vrs mk2 s2000 and was woundering what is the best oil for the engine that i should use. i know they recomend a type in the manual but i would like to hear peoples opinions. looking for somethign good on value and also performance.

thanks

Quantum LONGLIFE 3 Oil - 5w/30 - Available from dealer and ebay. Good stuff and is suitable for 99% of all VAG cars.

Per my dealer (and my previous posts) they suggest and use Castrol Edge 5W40, although 5W30 is fine if topping up.

Loads on the oil though, use search and read through peoples suggestions/experiences.

Also, get it from Asda (I think I remember seeing one near the beach in Aberdeen?) as it was £30 last time I checked, and about £45 in Halfords...

If you are able get it from Costco it is on offer at 20% off, £23.99 for 4ltrs. :D

Fuchs/Silkolene 5w30 pro race ester synthetic oil is the BEST, acknowledge on almost every owners club site i've ever been on, it's simple the highest quailty stuff out there, Opie oils is the place to get it from and you get a small owners club discount.

it's not cheap though, try £50+ for a 5litre bottle.

it's most popular in high revving engines as it protects them very well, like the 9000rpm S2000, it's simply the best

they do various grades including 15w/40 and a pro s(street) 10w/40

VAG Quantum Platinum 5W40 to the required (for the vRS) 502.00 specification and as per the Fabia Owners Manual.

Cheaper at a VW dealer than many other branded oils Quantum Platinum

From my brief forays into the MKII forum I gather some MKII vRSes can drink a bit of oil. I'll make sure I buy some just in case I need to top up (bought a litre to keep in the boot of my MKI vRS, but that never used any oil - well, not that I noticed - in the two years I had it).

When i bought my car, in the boot was a small bag with 1 ltr of castrol, some wipes and a paper funnel. not sure if it was my dealers freebie or something Slowda have recognised and offered help with

Same here: 1ltr bottle of Castrol 5W30 in a pouch in the boot for top-up purposes.

No oil in the boot freebie for me :( .

There's a VW dealership just along the road, so I'll nip in next Saturday, and get some for topping up purposes.

Dealer I bought it from said it's on the variable servicing plan - just to bring it in when the spanner (or whatever the alert is) pops up - he said some folk get 13,000 miles out of it, others less. Given that I'm unlikely to do more than 7,000 miles a year (almost certainly less) it may be some time... Am I right though it should be two years max. (between services) in any event?

Buy new or secondhand?? If new I believe ALL mk vRS are on short interval servicing, ie every 10,000miles. Check yhe HUGE sticker at the front of the handbook.. i can't remember what the code is for which service :S

All UK Fabia II models are on QG0 fixed 10,000 mile 12 month servicing.

Check the build sticker in your boot and the inside of the service book, should be the bottom left code.

I'll need to buy oil for topping up tomorrow. Should I stick with the 5w30 they gave me or would it be fine to top up with 5w40 as long as it meets VAG specs?

Both will be fine...the 5w30 is longlife, 5w40 is 502.00. I would check out ur local dealer bought 5ltrs of 5w40 fully synth 502.00 for 24quid!! (Quantum Platinum)

Service book says "as per service indicator". The car's a year old with 9.5k (9.9k now as I stuck 400 on it at the weekend) and I bought it from the original supplying dealer (they've just serviced it, so it isn't an immediate issue).

If I top up with non long-life then I'll obviously have to move to fixed.

Just to pretty much confirm everything already posted. I did email Castrol sometime ago to see if they could clarify and this was their reply;

Thank you for your e-mail.

Castrol EDGE 5W-30 carries the VW 504 00 specification which actually also covers VW 502 00 and so this would be a very good oil for your Skoda. Alternatively you can use EDGE 5W-40 (including the Turbo Diesel version - you can ignore the name, it's also very good for petrol engines) which carries the VW 502 00 specification as do a number of our other products. Our 10W-40 products meet VW 501 01, but this is not sufficient for your vehicle.

I hope this answers your query. Please contact us again if you require any further information.

Regards.

Bought it used last week - it's a year old and has just been serviced. Salesman told me it's on variable and next service recommendation says 'as per indicator' in the schedule. However, the code on the sticker in the inside of the service schedule cover pages indicates it should be on fixed. I'm confused!

Should I just buy 5W40 for top-ups and get it serviced annually anyway?

Edited to add: just phoned the service dept. of the dealer I bought the car from (who are also the original supplying dealer) - although the code in the service schedule indicates fixed this is the way it comes from the factory - it'll have been reset to variable apparently.

So I will have done 5k by January 2012 , it will be a year old then , will it be up for service then? If so is my castrol edge 5wx 40 better than what dealer uses? Or should I let them put the quantum stuff in , it's a crtdi 1.6 105 bhp

Got a 1l bottle of Castrol Edge for topping up purposes - Sainsbury's doing 25% off, so only £14 (Halfords is £17). It fits neatly into the 'pocket' in the boot as well.

Doesn't seem right only the VRS having the free oil in the boot ! But does tell you something though
