Favorit gearbox oil spec?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Just a query about gearbox oil for the Favorit, I'm doing some maintenance for my fathers and need to replace the oil. The manual states 80w GL4. Does anyone know if it's safe to use 80/90w GL5 in the gearbox?. (I only ask as we have gallons of this kicking around but no GL4 stuff!)

Many thanks,

Paul

I believe that GL5 will be 'better', effectively as it will resist wear more than a GL4 one. And tbh I wouldn't worry about it, it'll be fine as long as you have the right amount in there.

I too had a couple of gallons of 80/90 so i chucked that in. The gear change was awful when cold, and not much better when warm. I changed it for GL4 75/80 (from Hellfrauds) and it's excellent, even at -2 this morning.

Thanks for the feedback guys, due to the experience of stelladragon, I think I'll go and buy some GL4! lol!!

Note that it's the grade that makes the improvement in how the box feels, mind...

Yep the grade rather than 'GL4', 75/80 is the stuff to get. I got mine from Halfords as I have a trade card so it makes the price realistic!
