Problem when starting engine - 2.0 TDi

Featured Replies

Hi there,

Just wanted to know if anyone has had problems when starting up the engine?

It only just happened to me this morning, where I started the engine but it cut out almost immediately. This happened again on my second attempt, then on the third I gave it a little bit of gas and off she went..

Has anyone else had this issue? Am I looking at possible long term problems? I've only just bought the car last week so still have warranty for 3 months through the dealer, but I'm just curious whether this is a common problem. I'm guessing it could of been an air lock because she did fire up after giving a bit of gas, but I'm by no means an exper in these things so any help will be grately appreciated! :)

Kind Regards

Have you used Biodiesel by any chance? I was reading that this can form globules which temporarily block up the fuel filter when the engine is cold but dissolve up in the process of trying to start the engine (although I presume it's not that cold in NSW at this time of year). There is a warning in the handbook and on the fuel filler cap of my Scout not to use biodiesel, possibly for this reason. Just a thought.

Thanks for your reply! Nope definitely did not use biodiesel.. TBH I don't even think I've seen any biodiesel around here.

I'm going to change the fuel filter anyway and give it a good service. The dealers that sold it to me claimed they only serviced it 3000km's ago, but the 'service now' display shows up everytime I start the car, and also the log books were stamped by the dealer with no comments as to what had been done in the service.. just sounded dodgy from the start.. And also when I picked up the car, the tank was empty which after reading the manuals it says you should never run the car to empty...

This morning I started the car first go, no problem at all. So hopefully it was nothing major and it doesn't come back!

Sounds like you might have sorted it. I think that in the UK most Diesel has about 5% or so of Bio in it but I don't think that 100% is widely available here either.

If you have an MFD you can reset the service interval yourself to save a trip to the dealer.
