High beam bulbs

Featured Replies

I spent £20 on high beam bulbs from Halfords being told they'd be a crisp blue but they just look OEM... I want some bulbs to be a nice white/kinda blue to match 6000k HID's. Any suggestions on a make?

Moral of story -old sage say Halfraud bloke not always speak from mouth - he may make noises from rear end inside trousers ,like bull - it's called bull**** .

Use illegal 100watt bulbs same fitting as 55watt originals, Xenon gas filled, (not halogen) , no extra heat generated or power consumed.

Choice of BLUE or CLEAR/WHITE.

Use illegal 100watt bulbs

:wonder:

Can't really see the harm in this tbh.

You only really use full beams when you are alone on the road

and when loads more light is proper handy like...

Especially when you drive many miles on unlit b roads like I now do.

I've just upgraded the H4 headlight bulbs on the Kangoo. The originals

were woeful on country lanes. The ones in there were non branded rubbish

fitted by the garage where it used to be serviced with its last owner.

Full beam was decent but dipped was rubbish.

So I'd be using full beams in between each oncoming car in places where

decent dipped beams (Like on all my cars) would be sufficient.

Pain in the butt, click click click all the way down the road.

It was a distraction from driving too, click click click.

At the weekend, I got some Osram silver star +50% bulbs and

the difference, (pardon the pun) was night and day.

On unlit roads, I now only use my full beams when it's really really dark.

Dipped beam is improved by about 20 metres now and whiter light.

Full beam was pretty good with the old bulbs but now it's

even better. Got the pair for £11.09 delivered as well. Bargain!

Just get HIDs for the full beam?

If you've got them already it seems the legality issues don't bother you, and un-less you never turn them off they won't impact on other road users at all anyway. . .

I have HID full beams. They're awesome.

I've been thinking about going that way. What HIDs have you used, and how much were they? I'd hate to be without the Xenon dipped beams, and adding HID for high beam sounds like a good idea....

Paul.

Had a set from my old car, so couldn't recall price. check out rclick though decent kits for decent prices

My RX-8 uses the full and dip beam for flashing, the dip being factory xenons. While they take a second or so to turn to a stable colour, you can flash them on and off very quickly with no (short term) issues at all, it's very much like the BMW setups in appearance (that I think use a solenoid and a shutter).

Despite what the "aces" in that site say, power used is quoted as "100watts" - that is the total power that these bulbs will "take" when connected to a 12 volt voltage source - so the "quoted no extra heat generated or power consumed" is wrong, and this is backed up by the "not legal for road use". Light output is never quoted in "watts" - that is only the pwer consumed mainly as heat generated by the filament and a small addition for the light output.

ive heard those 100 watt bulbs can melt your headlights.

+1

Power consumed is measured in wattage....so a 55w bulb on 12v will draw 4.583 amps current.....a 100w bulb on 12v will draw 8.3 amps current......enough of an increase to melt the wiring and blow the fuse etc! :o

Light output is measured in either Lumens or Lux, dependent on wether it is a focused spot or an unfocused glow light!

The only legal way around this without melting the plastic reflectors/lenses is to fork out for the 100% brighter versions of the (same OEM Fit/type/size/wattage) Osram or Phillips bulbs......I have them fitted to all bulbs on the front (3 sets...high, dipped, & fog)..........."I can see clearly now".... :giggle:

P.S.......there is also the chance that the packaging blurb means "equivilent light output of a 100w bulb" (have seen this term used on light bulb packaging)...this on a 55w/or 60w bulb would be almost a "90% brighter bulb"......BUT if the bulb defo has 100w etched on the base then it is a 100w power consumtion bulb......problems with heat will happen!

Well I've fitted 100w bulbs into mine (had blue coated 4500k 'colour match' bulbs before) and it is MUCH brighter (even more so than the 55w nightbreakers in my sisters Fabia) although it is a lot more yellow.

IMO you won't find any bulbs that will match HID's for colour. Does it really matter as 95% of the time no one will see your full beams?

I've ordered some 100w '6000k' H7 bulbs from eBay. I'll let you know how I find them...
