strange internal light behaviour

Featured Replies

I was driving down the road (say 1/2 mile after setting off), and I noticed all 3 of the interior lights illuminate (centre ones by the internal mirror). They went off about a second or so later.

Initially I wondered if a door was only part open (I checked a bit later, it wasn't). Then about a minute or so later it happened again.

I arrived at my destination a few minutes later, opened the boot, delivered what I needed to so and drove home, and I did not notice the lights come on again. As this was during daylight (and I normally drive in the darker hours), I am assuming this is a new feature that my car has developed.

Any ideas? All electrics seem to be functioning as per normal (ie. correctly), although I am half expecting the drivers door not to lock, etc.

The car normally lives in a garage, so is sheltered from the elements, although I do know the drivers door leaks a bit (I was at my parents over the weekend), but there was no water on the door seal when I opened the door on Monday morning to drive back home.

Thanks,

Matt

Drains from the sunroof leaking? Pull off the panel to access the sunroof motor and see if there is any dampness in there.

mmm, no leakage which I had noticed - I fitted a new parrot kit a while back, so I guess I might have stabbed a drainage pipe while threading the mic cable in.

It was an "all lights" on job, as if a door was open.

That panel is the rear one, isn't it?

Drivers door lock microswitch possibly.

Mine has the opposite problem, and it thinks the drivers door never opens. Maybe yours thinks the drivers door is opening.

Try blasting the lock mechanism with WD40...

If I use the key to unlock the boot, the interior lights come on as if I had opened all the doors with the remote. This suggests that there is a microswitch in the estate's rear lock that send a signal to the convenience system.

Also you said things changed after opening the boot door.

My guess is that there a fault in the rear lock assembly - water ingress? faulty microswitch? mechanical operator of the switch is seizing up?

Perhaps water or contact corrosion in the wiring from boot lock through the boot (perhaps due to leaking washer fluid pipe)?

Rear washer working properly (never had a failure in the tailgate, only under the CD changer). I will exercise the lock manually (it is due that) and then keep an eye on it. The car has been outside for a few days at my parents (but it didn't really rain). There is definitely a microswitch in the boot lock assembly as it controls the lights in the boot.

Thanks all :-)
