Clunking sound from front / FOUND THAT BSTRD

Featured Replies

Again problems with my Skoda. Now I have some clunking problem from the front. I had my steering rack repaired hoping it's from there, but no. It did have some movement and they repaired it, but it did not solve the problem. I have noticed, when you brake to stop (engine running) and then press the brake pedal down all the way, there is a clunk from front left. Could it be maybe brake booster failing or something to do with caliper? All the brakes have been cleaned, put together correctly several times. Once the pads were moving inside the caliper, then welded some new corners to caliper, that it would not move anymore, but still have enough clearance to move, when it gets hot in there.

Front suspension has been checked several times and all the bushings are OK. I am suspecting maybe cv joints, because, when turning left it makes the tik,tik noice.

Welded corners to caliper?? Front brake pads are clunking when they're swapped around, you need to observe marks on the pads.

Best advice: change the workshop as they're feeding you lies or have no clue what they're doing.

Sorry for the lack of my technical english. I meant the caliper carrier. The brake pads lean on the caliper carriers corners (http://img560.imageshack.us/img560/1572/wheel25brake7.jpg). I put a red line on that. The corners were too worn off and pads were too loose in there (moving up and down). They welded new corners and it got a little bit better, but still not enough.

I fitted there Ferodo SL pads but when fitting them, I did not see any markings on them, that which one goes to which side. Is there any other signs, which is for the correct side?

Inner pads are sided, arrow stamped on them must point in the direction of rotation.

Still a clunk. Now it sounds like, it's coming from under the left door or something. I am quite ****ed on this car. Also have a clunk from the dashboard, when turning left or right. Steering rack changed, all the front suspension double checked by certified mechanics etc. Also the glove box is rattling from the door underneath

ESTONIAN ROADS :-)

Yes. Should just go to Germany and live happily ever after :D.

But coming back to the clunk, I have read about the subframe clunk on the passats, where the bolts just wear out. Could this be the problem? I have ordered 4 new bolts with washers to find out. :wonder:

Tik tik noise when you apply steering lock and accelerate will be CV joint I'm afraid.

As for brake pads, I had same problem, suspected pads to be in wrong side, but that wasn't the problem. Instead movement of pads in the carriers was because they were aftermarket pads. Changed to genuine parts and clunking cured!!

CV Joints changed. Pads yes aftermarket, but don't want genuine anymore. Ferodo FTW.

Ok, some time has passed, but still the clunk is there.

For now these are changed:

All the lower control arms with stabilizer links (genuine)

New steering rack.

New brake pads (that doesn't rattle)

Still the clunk is coming when accelerating from some speed, braking, turning sometimes. Been in dealership and they thought that maybe the engine mounts could be making it (one mount had a little hydraulic liquid on it). So is it possible that engine mounts could clunk? I thought they should only rattle.

Also if these aren't the cause, what else should be checked? Any ideas on shocks, that they can move some clunking way?

All the clunks happen in straight road with no holes. Sometimes when driving over some bump with front end and then rear end, the sound occurs after driving over with rear end. I am so sick of this clunk that I just don't have any ideas what else to check.

Have you checked the condition of the rubber in the engine snub mount, front centre?

rotodiesel.

The engine mounts are my next change (with snub mount). If this wont work, then I am out of ideas. It has been in dealership + different VAG specialized workshops.

I have same problem!I just had the suspension changed, which solved one of the knocking, but one still there!A different one!I have a feeling,is something with the exhaust maybe,or a cover touching the chassis, but i am nut sure!I have been in many places trying to find out the problem, but still nothing, this is my next idea..

Ok guys. Finally the end of long journey. After changing all the front suspension arms, all engine mounts (including snub mount), transmission mounts, rear axle bushings, front brake pads and 5x steering rack I finally found out what causes the clunk.

Are you ready for this?

Tadaa front left upper door hinge. It's rollers had seized up and all that it needed was some wd40 sprayed on it to make the rollers go again. I must say, that it was some expensive door hinge for me.

So here is the moral. Always start with the easiest things. Dealer and all other VAG based workshops did not find it in first.

Then I got a number to dealers workshop head manager who did a little test drive with the car and voila. First words that he said was "door hinges".
