The fact that you are asking the question probably means "no". It depends on what type of photography you are interested in. If you want to take shots of large groups inside or want to shoot landscapes or be creative with wide angle close ups, then the answer is yet. Why not see can you borrow one from a friend to see if it suits your style of photography. Or hire one out for a few days.

But sometimes you don't know what you are missing until you've got it

I always forget the try-before-you-buy hiring option - not sure if any of the local shops offer that facility

I was really after any observations from people who might have one to indicate if it's been worthwhile having

When I got my Canon 10-22 it was mainly to play with the distortion of a wide angle lens. Which was fun for a while - but 90% of the time it now sits in the bag and only comes out when I physically have no room and need to capture more of the scene.

Unless you've specifically got a use for it then I wouldn't bother - put the money towards something you know you'd use. (Or, as said, rent one for a week and see if you get bored of it)

Does your Nikon record the actual focal length used like my Canon does?

If so, go through your photos and count how many times you used your 18-250 at 18mm. If that number is high then chances are that many times you were really needing less than 18 but had to make do. So buy your 10-20. If you hardly ever use it at 18mm then you are hardly ever likely to use the 10-20.

However if "NEED" is really "WANT" and you have the cash then WTF! Go buy it!

Word of caution - I know 2 people with the 10-20 Sigma (both Canon fit). One has the F3.5 and the other the F4-5.6(?). Both had serious focussing issues and both returned their lens to Sigma and got replacements. Both are delighted with the replacements but it does make you doubt Sigma's quality control.

Thanks for that warning

Had a quick look in Jessops today, and see Tamron do a 10-24mm zoom, so I'll have a read up on those too

Or how about a fast prime? or fast, short zoom? ;)

Hmmm... Maybe I'm biased but wouldn't give Tamron houseroom! Have you thought about the Tokina 11-16mm? That is the one that is on my Santa list.

NB that both the folk who have the Sigmas are now very happy with them - just a bit of hassle.

I find this site does good reviews:

The Sigma, Tamron and Tokina are all covered as well as the Canon 10-22 - but that won't be much use to you :giggle:

I bought a 10-22 from Canon, I used it for a few landscapes and the odd car shot or trucks but it seems the lens just sits in the bag now, I would also agree with the other comments about after market lenses, I have a sigma 170-500 zoom, it is dreadful! I use it as a door stop in my office. I have Canon bodies and all Canon lenses.

Have you thought about a Samyang 8mm lens as a different option?

Brimma you don't need our permission, if you can sneek it in without SHMBO knowing, then go for it. In the lens "waving" contest, you know you'll feel inadequate without it

I've got a 14-24 Nikkor 2.8 for my D3, Full-frame series cameras - it's not used every shoot, but has pulled me out of the S*** from time to time when i've just had no room for a 24-70 and needed something wider. - My kit bag wouldn't be without it - but, this is professional use - i think i would go for a Fish-Eye as a Toy lens.

Al.

Sigma's can be a bit hit and miss for quality apparently.

Have a look at the Tokina 11-16 f2.8, I've got one and really like it.

I've got the Sigma and I used to use it a lot until I realised I was mainly shooting at the long end, and that my 18-70 would cover that better and sharper. The Sigma is very very wide, and while it can be useful, it's a very specific 'novelty' effect that I generally don't really like any more.

I have the 10-20 on my d300 and ready like it. Obviously it's not for general use but when you want to go wide it's a cracker. No quality issues at all. If you want it and can afford it then go get it. Have a look on nikonians.org for any for sale too.

No you need the Sigma 8-16mm. I love mine and have no issues at all with it. Its also rectilinear :)

Can you get pills for that?

8-16 should give some awesome effects

Lots of good answers coming thanks

If the oinkment doesn't work try looking at this! I know it's a Canon forum, but the images are pretty much what you will get with your Nikon

Just rent one and see how you get on.

Although of your after a wide angle zoom i highly suggest the tokina 11-16mm, tack sharp and faster aperture. You won't miss out on the additional focal length the sigma offers, but you'll always find the tokina's wider aperture advantageous

I really like my Sigma 10-20 and used it a lot before I went full frame. It does have a little vignetting and some odd but not too intrusive distortion (correctable with PT Lens plugin if it ever bothers you). I now use a 17-35 for wide angle but the next lens I buy will most likely be the Sigma 12-24 which would give a field of view similar to what you would see from an 8mm lens on an APS-C sensor camera or a wide prime.

Wide angle lenses can help to exaggerate perspective and help with using the sky when appropriate. Also helps to use geometric forms in the foreground to lead the eye into the shot.

This image was taken with the 17mm lens on the full frame camera (so would be similar to an 11.3mm lens on the APS-C body).

Suer you dont need one, but you know you want one ;)

Chris

Have to say I do a good bit of landscape shooting and the 10-20mm is seldom off my camera!

Great lens for the money.

Nice one. Personally I will be taking mine out in the snow later if the flu ever subsides and I stop coughing. Looking forward to seeing the results
