service light on again after only 12k

Featured Replies

Hi guys, not been on here for a bit as everything's been ok until now !

my pd vrs service light came on about 3 weeks ago after only 12k and 9 months, which frankly just ain't good enough...

i had it serviced at the end of Jan when it was on 70k, it had the cambelt done during June when it was on 76k,it also had oil and filter as well. the last service before the one it had in Jan, it had only managed 11k and 10 months !

as far as i know its on variable service, which i believe is 2 years and 20k ??? its not driven hard, spends 75% of its time sat at 60ish on a 40 mile round trip on a, A road, to and from work.

ive had the car 18 months and done 24k, i love everything about the car, apart from the service intervals, having to have it serviced every 10 months and 12k is very poor....

does it have to be serviced now or can i go until the end of jan, which would be 1 year and well under the 20k max....

anybody got any ideas why the light is coming on so early ?

thanks guys !

Variable is just that! 2 years/20k is the max.

I service my car every 9/10 weeks, yes.... Weeks! Try living with that...

My wife's car gets serviced every year or 10k, which ever comes first. No a fan of long life services tbh.

Your well out of Skoda warranty now so I'd be getting it serviced at a local specialist instead.

A basic service (oil, oil filter and air filter) should be around the £100 mark.

Now the cambelt has been done your good for another 4 years. Servicing for £100 / year is pretty good going.

Variable servicing can vary in terms of mileage, a lot of things are monitored such as the number of cold starts, journey times, driving style etc.

The 'for and against' fixed vs. variable debate will always exist but I agree with above and prefer to know my cars get fresh oil once a year / every 10K.

Not too concerned about the mileage between services, i just want to have it serviced every 12 months, doesn’t variable servicing allow for this, or would fixed servicing be better? I do about 16k a year

Fixed servicing is 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever you reach first.

So at 16,000 miles a year the car would be flagging up for a service every 6 months.

I'd leave it as it is on variable and service it when it asks, it sounds as though it's asking for a service around every 12 months anyway?

I understand it must be frustrating that you aren't getting more time between services, 12,000 miles / 9 months is very soon which would make me think something is a miss, especially with the type of driving you do...

its variable so how can you have 12months?

At 16k a year you are best on variable as if you go on fixed you need it done ever 10k rather than 12k or more than you currently get. Changing the oil half way through probably confuses the system anyway and seems pointless having either service regime if you are doing that.

It measures levels, cold starts and oil quality on variable. I've always got 17k plus out of my old pd and my mate once got 24k as its up to 30k intervals on variable.

20k, 40k and 63k on mine on variable (although garage did reset to fixed at one point by accident). 12k certainly sounds a bit short?

would it do any harm if i leave it until the end of jan, which would be 12months and about 16k ???

It is what it says variable.

It all depends on how you drive and also what engine.

My 1st TDi Octavia went around 30k between services.

My 2nd and 3rd TDi s went around 24k.

My current 1.8 TSi is around 18k.

On all on them I have been driving around 1000 miles a week.

It will be fine as you only changed oil a few thousand a go.

oil would have done about 10k by end of jan, so tempted to leave it....

Be absolutely fine.

As your vRS has a DPF it should have the long life oil in it anyway so 10,000 miles is absolutely fine.

As has been mentioned previously cars have been known to go as long as 20,000+ miles on the same oil.

I have my concerns about the long term implications of that sort of mileage on the same oil but there are a lot of members who have done big mileage on variable with no problems.

Yep, Bora currently on 90k and mates Polo now on 125k...
