Function keys on eeepc 901 xp not working

Featured Replies

Help - as per the above post really. I can't find a solution in the eeeuser forum as it's down and I've tried re-installing Asus ACPI Driver and Instant Keys plus updating Bios etc...

It's getting annoying as I can't adjust screen and volume etc using the function keys so would like to fix it

Thanks

Running XP?? Did you uninstall the drivers and do a full reboot before installing the fresh versions?? Xp doesnt always successfully replace a damaged file with the new version.

Yep - XP - runs it pretty well with 2Gb RAM...

Re the ACPI, I Uninstalled and re-booted but it told me the ACPI was missing and re-installed it itself before I had the chance to do it myself, even having downloaded the recent updates. I therefore tried uninstalling the old version and then installing the fresh ones without a re-boot. Funny thing is the dates on the drivers and the version numbers don't seem to tally on the ASUS website, so the most recent by date is 1.0.0.1 dated 12/06/09 but there is a version 4.00.0010 update dated 21/01/09.

Even after updating mine suggests it is 1.0.0.1 dated 19/06/08 which is the date of version 1.0.0.0??????

Argghhh...

I have noticed the weird numbering a few times, they also have video drivers listed in two different places and two different version numbers, with the higher version number being the OLDER file.

I didnt have any problems changing mine after a file corruption problem, but deleting the actual service doesnt remove the driver cache, so it is just reloading the bad driver again.  Make a note of the  old driver name and search your 901 for the files and manually delete them, THEN reboot; it shouldnt be able to find the old, damaged files, so you can then point it at the new files, or run the new installer.

If that still doesnt work, it could be you have had an infection/problem that has damaged other parts of the OS; after a rogue Samsung software install went wild and deleted several system files, I cannot get some of the card games to work, even after deleting and installing known good copies of the files from another XP box.

Incidentally, are you still using the original SSD ?? I took out the old, slow 16GB, relegated the slightly faster on-board 4GB SSD as the D:/ drive, and fitted a super fast RunCore Patriot 32GB SSD as my new C:/ drive.. They are not cheap, but make the 901 into a proper PC.

There is very little my PC back in the UK can do that I cannot also do on my 901 now, with few noticeable slow-downs.  About the only thing it struggles with is decoding mkv files while running uTorrent and QQ in the background.

Thanks for that - I'll have a look when I get a quiet half hour to concentrate and make sure I do it right.

As for the SSD - it's still the original I'm afraid but for what I use it for it's fine.
