New member with some questions

Hi all

I'm a newbie on this forum.

Just bought my first Skoda, a '57 plate 6spd manual 35k race blue Octavia vRS 2.0T FSi. Generally happy but some questions :-

1) the gearshift is stiff when moved from side to side (it doesnt readily spring to a central position), and this makes it awkward to select gears, any suggestions what this could be and how to fix it ?

2)the car has now been fitted with 18" vRS alloys (was originally fitted with 17" vRS wheels). Is there any recalibration required for the speedo etc ?

3)fuel consumption doesnt seem great by the MFD display but could this be incorrect due to point 2 ?

Any comments welcome.

Cheers

Angus

Hi Angus, :)

Can't comment on the diameter of the wheels requiring re-calibration but I'd get the gearshift looked at PDQ as it shouldn't be like that. Did you get it from dealer? If so, I would get it booked in & fixed soonest.

What sort of consumption does the trip computer reckon you're getting by the way?

I travel on a mixture of rural, A/Motorway & urban roads to & from work & seem to return around 35mpg on average & do no more than an indicated 80mph (honest officer) :giggle: on A roads/M-Ways.

Bit of a shock after the 55mpg + of my previous Octavia 2.0 Diesel but still not too shabby given what it's capable of.

Regards,

David.

Welcome to the forum.

Regarding the wheels, it does not matter. What is important is the tyre sizes.

If the bigger alloys have smaller profile tyres you should be OK, but if you let us know the before and after tyre sizes it's easy to work out. Or even just what size tyres you have now.

Hi David,

The gearshift actually appears to be loosening up the more I use it. I actually obtained the car 2 weeks ago through a 3rd party broker, a long standing friend of a guy I know, to whom I gave a brief and he went away and did the legwork of finding it. It was sourced through a Skoda dealer in Scotland but I think had been on the forecourt rather overpriced and hence I believe had been standing for almost a year (as the previous owner had signed the V5 on 28.11.2010 !)

As the broker must have done a blinding deal, one of the first things that went was any warranty ! Fuel consumption appears to be low to mid 20's but I need to check how many miles its done and fill it back up to check properly. It does about 180 miles fropm full to half as indicated on the fuel gauge. I suppose it is sporty though and I may still be getting used to driving it !!

Cheers Angus

Hi BossFox,

Its on vRS 18 inch with 225/40 x 18 which I specified that I wanted, and these were retrofitted by the Skoda dealer. However the car originally came with vRS 17's which I think had 225/45 x 17 tyres. Ive done the maths and you're right theres no over all difference in diameter or circumference.

Glad to hear the gearshift's improving - perhaps it had just stiffened up (insert innuendo-laden joke here) through lack of use sitting on the forecourt.. ;)

180 miles on half a tank sounds about right for a mixture of what I'd assume to be normal & 'spirited' driving - in my experience at least.

If I play 'orange light bingo' - © J. Clarkson - i can get 400 miles, maybe more out of a tank but I don't usually like to run it that low.

Keep an eye on the gearshift & perhaps mention it when you next have it serviced - I'd imagine it's most likely a sticky linkage (insert innuendo, etc) & might just need a bit of use or some grease to get it back to normal.

Thanks David.

Do you run yours on 95 ron unleaded or 98 super? Inside my petrol flap it says 95 ron but also says super unleaded ? Confusing unless perhaps in other countries 95 ron is considered super if they have lower grades available ?

Regards Angus

I run mine on 98, costs more but you get more mpg and slightly more bhp too , oh and welcome

Hi Angus - I use Super whenever possible as it seems to return improved mpg figures (although that could be all in my mind).

Shell V-Power is generally regarded as being A Good Thing amongst those who express a preference..

:)
