Low coolant ?

Featured Replies

This morning got in my car and started it up, very cold. After a couple of seconds the engine temp light bleeps and flashes. Look in book to see what it means and it says turn off engine immediately. I turned engine off and looked at coolant level under bonnet, it was low but above the minimum. I have not noticed any leaks and was wondering if anyone else had the same or similar problem or if it is a common fault on a particular pipe or component. I have noticed a burning rubber smell occasionally when I have parked the car. This might not be related though as it is normally around the back when I smell it. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Cheers

Scrape the prongs on the coolant lids that act as sensors. They corrode over time and get a coating. I had this on my previous Seat, turns out it's not uncommon.

Cheers, I will try that.

Daz,

Top up the coolant to the max level after cleaning the sensors-prongs if there is any build up on them.

Carry coolant mixed water in the car for any emergency top up if required if you suspect missing coolant. Observe the coolant level after top up for 100-200 kms or 2- 3 weeks for any change in the coolant level if your daily usage is low.

If you find missing coolant without any visible leaks, If areas such as coolant pipes, radiator,Coolant bottle and coolant bottle cap are ruled out.

It could also be a leaking EGR Cooler if it is equipped with one.

Some of the vehicles with EGR Coolers have coolant leaking in very small quantity, which is very difficult to track.

If you fill to max when cold, won't it overflow from the expansion bottle under normal running temps?

No. You're suppose to fill when cold so the Max line is appropriate. It will go above this when the car is warm but that's normal.

I had a problem of low coolant last month on my 1.8 TSI. It needed a new bottom hose as it was starting to leak.

Didnt see it myself as it was under warranty but the car is only just over a year old with 60k on the clock.
