Another Coolant Loss Thread

Featured Replies

Hi all,

My VRS has basically been losing a fair amount of coolant over a few days worth of longish journeys. It has been into the garage and they are saying that there is a build up of pressure which is forcing the coolant out. They have pressure tested the system and tested the head gasket and both were ok. The garage stated that it could be a cracked head but they wanted to test everything else first before they went down this route. I have replaced the coolant cap, just in case, but the loss still occurs.

Is there anything else that could cause the build up in pressure or am i looking at a fairly hefty bill ??

Any help or advice would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Chris.

Also have this problem, would like to find the cause.

Hi Chris

Had the same problem ours, and dealer found fault ! Leaking Radiator, only suffered problems on long journeys, round town was ok.

but there was no sign any where of a leak, but after the replacement was fitted no problem !

hopefully it is a leak somewhere as i dont particularly want to pay £2000 if it is a cracked head !!

There are a few likely causes from what I've read and been advised on here; some of which are radiator, coolant temperature sensor and heater matrix.

I had a similar problem last winter, and it turned out to be a hairline crack in the heater matrix.

Unfortunately this is a dash out job, and with parts totalled just over £500.

I feel your pain, and still freak out a little when I hear the fuel light ping- induces horrible memories of refilling the coolant reservoir in torrential rain at night!

Hope you identify the problem and can sort it at a reasonable cost

Hi there,

I battled this problem for months and I commute 110 miles a day. I was on here loads reading tprevious posts and praying it was cylinder head. To cut a long story short it turned out to be a cracked cylinder head. I had my cylinder head reconditioned and touch wood its been ok since! All in all it cost me £1400 to get it done including the cost of a hire car for a week, new camvelt, tensioner, head gasket, head Bolts and a few other bits.

I ran it for 500 miles and then changed the oil. Done over 2000 miles now and all seems good 'touch wood'

I almost sold the car! Was really frustrating me, in and out the garage all the time and Skoda did all there test and couldn't find out what it was. They quoted me over 3k but a got a friend of a friend who's a macanic to do it.

I'm so glad I kept it because there's nothing else for the same money that I could afford. Looked at a Mondeo st tdci and Astra Sri cdti 150 but they don't have the fabia quirkiness.

Just bite the bullet and put it in. All will be forgotten once it's done and you turn that key again.

All the best

Clarkey666 I'm the same as you mate!!! Hahahaha nightmare!

I was praying it 'wasn't' cylinder head I meant

car goes in on Wednesday. The garage have been really helpful so far and they have said they will try everything else first as they know it will be an expensive job. They have said the PD130 has been prone to this issue. I know that i wont be able to buy another car for the cost of a cracked head so i will pay for it if i have to.

Good luck mate, may turn out to be a simple fix
