F1 free to all SKY HD subscribers ?

Featured Replies

Not sure if it's been posted yet, but SKY are apparently doing a motorsport channel that will show F1 and other stuff, free to any HD subscriber, irrespective of whether you have the sports package or not. I am pleased if it is true as I have HD and it looks like Mr Brundle may defect too.

SKY F1 LINKY

I'm sure that either your link or this link will be correct Amanda! ;)

Knowing Sky though - they'll probably come up with a third scenario?

Hmmm there is a bit of vagueness about the mention of people with the HD package and it's a bit like the recent thread about BODMAS, it can be interpreted two ways. Perhaps it will not be so free :( but I might as well be optimistic :)

Actually reading the bottom bit again, it shows the price of SKY TV with HD as a separate figure to that of SKY Sport (hinting that it may well be OK), so I am defo keeping my fingers crossed :)

see f1.sky.com

one of the pages on there says:

Free for our Sky Sports 1 & 2 customers

and our Sky HD customers

HD pack required for HD version

Click for terms and conditions

and the terms say:

Sky Sports 1 & 2 means the full Sky Sports Pack. Sky TV subscription with HD pack £30.25/month, Sky TV subscription with Sky Sports 1&2 £40/month, HD Pack £10.25 extra. Prices are monthly by Direct Debit. Box and set up required. 12 months minimum term. Sky TV UK households only. Further terms apply.

I'm struggling to read that as anything other than if you have HD, you'll get it....

Yup, the way I understood it was:

IF "Sky HD Subscriber" OR "Sky Sports Subscriber" THEN "Sky F1 HD" = Part Of Package

:giggle:

Next door has been looking into this. He asked about future years. He was told Sports packages - Yes, HD package - No. So it looks like you will need a sports package for 2013.

Better start saving up then, unless Vet tel keeps racing, in which case, I won't bother.

+1, Paul!

Yes and no - see post #6

You do not need a sports package. You need the HD pack OR a sports pack.

Lots of full page adverts in the national press today giving the details.

My next door neighbour called Sky. He doesn't have HD and didn't want to upgrade only to find that at some point in the future it would only be available to Sky Sports subscribers. He specifically asked about 2013 onwards and was told that only the 2012 season would be free for HD subscribers. Whilst it could be that the sales droid at Skynet got it wrong, it does sound like something they would do.

Do the press ads say different?

The ads say "free for our SKY HD customers"

Only the 2012 season availabilty has been disclosed by SKY. Things may change for the 2013 season but it has not been officially announced either way. Nor would you expect it to have been as its only 2011. I guess they'll judge what happens in 2012 with viewer numbers/advertiser reaction etc.

You may well need sports in 2013 to get F1 (who knows?) but it isn't policy (yet!).

This sounds about right to me. Free for the first year to draw you in and later subscription. I can't see how SKY would make money having a 90 min race with no advertising. At least Footie gives them an ad break or two after half that time.

Makes sense doesn't it.

Get you used to watching it on Sky and after the fuss has died down squeeze you for extra cash.

Sky HD pack isn't free though, it's £10 per month. I was going to drop HD in the new year but will probably keep it now because of the F1 which = £120 more for Sky over the year!

It'll be like DTM for me, I know it's there, but ain't paying for it.

The title does say free to all HD subscribers :p What I hope doesn't happen is SKY give us F1 free for just one year, then charge us after that.

I wonder what sort of deal/package Sky would put in place if everyone cancelled their sports channel subscriptions for 1 year?

and I quote from the website...

he dedicated channel will be provided at no extra charge to all Sky TV customers who take both Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports 2 or the HD pack of channels. It will be found at 408 in Sky's on-screen guide, after a scheduled move of the Sky Sports channels. Sky Sports viewers without the Sky+ HD pack will receive a standard definition version.

so if you have the HD pack, its free! (woot! ) sorry I have HD, I didnt want to pay for it either...

AND martin brundle has signed, saying he's looking forward to doing the extra technical features ect... wouldnt be the same without brundle..

edit; they key word in the quote being "or"

just to confirm further, I have just had an e-mail from sky saying I get the new F1 channel free.. I have HD, but not sky sports :)
