Oil change

Featured Replies

Ok so I'm 4k off the next offical service so as the oil is a little low and its done 5k+ since last service by Awesome (by previous owner) I was going to do an oil change and filter change myself.

Obv I will get a genuine filter but can anyone recommend a good pd oil?

I was thinking Car Lube's Triple R PD oil?

I just use Quantum Platinum from my local dealer.

Delco any good? I've had a quote of £26 for 5l of Delco and Mahle oil filter?

Oh. I'll chip in on this one, since I have recently discovered that oil is a minefield.

My cam is worn and will be having it replaced soon, so I have been hunting around tdiclub (hope I am allowed to mention them here) trying to find the best oil for camshaft / lifter protection.... It's given me a headache. A lot of them over there seem to actually suggesting NON VW 505.01/507.00 spec oils, such as Mobil 1 TDT, Mobil Delvac 1 and some others I can't remember, based on oil analysis results. I can't seem to find any of them over here in the UK though anyway.

I am thinking of going with Motul 8100 X-Clean 5w40. All that I can find on it so far suggests that it is supposed to be very good, and it is actually 505.01 spec. Another highly recommended one was Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5w40, but as ever I can't find that over here either... only the "non M" 5w30!

For what it's worth, since I have had the car I have been using Comma X-FLOW PD oil... and even changing it earlier than ~10k. Couldn't tell you if the wear was due to this oil, or some other wrong oil used in the past though :-(

Up to 70k it was serviced by a Skoda dealer (Robert Bamford?), no mention of what type of oil though. The next ~27k is a bit suspect (a different dealer, and two garages... one wrote "5-30"). From then on it was mine.

Thanks for the input dude mine has 7 stamps by Skoda and 1 by awesome so hopefully the past oil used has been correct.

Just a massive choice and I am not sure which is best or good whatever.

No probs.

Yeah, me neither really! The big names as found on opieoils seemed to be appearing in my tdiclub searches, but actually finding out what's good and what's not is a whole different story - I don't understand oil analysis and oil specs beyond 505.01 and such...!

Being a briskoda member gets you a bit of discount on opieoils too, just in case you didn't know :)
