Octy VRS estate vs Audi A6 Avant

Featured Replies

Im about to sell my wives car 530d e60, great car but just need something slighlty more pratical. I havent drove any of the metioned cars however both fit the bill for looks and practicality, can anyone point me in the right direction or have any experiences of both of these cars. It would have to be the VRS version of the Octy but for the Audi i would be open to the engine size and whatever spec.

Any opinions welcome,

Cheers

The vRS is more akin to the A4 than the A6 so you are not really comparing apples with apples.

The Superb is more in line with the A6.

The A6 is bigger and of course way way more expensive new. I ridden in an older A6 a few years ago and it was really nice inside but possibly had the worst ride of any car I've ever been in.

I looked at Volvo V50 and audi A4 in estate before I bought my hatch. We wanted estate as we were having a baby. Volvo V50 to small and Audi's generally overpriced in comparison to age/spec etc you get with the VRS.

My hatch is for sale and the most practical car we have had. No need for an estate unless you are constantly load huge objects in and out. All you are gaining is a small traingle section at the top. Load capacity is almost the same :)

I have a 2010 A6 Audi Avant SE 2.0 TDIe (136ps) and 2011 Octavia Greenline Estate . Size wise the A6 is slightly bigger but is as easy to manoeuvre as the Skoda . The A6 is made from better quality materials and seems a lot more "engineered". Can't really compare anything else as the VRs is a slightly different beast to a Greenline

The Audi radio/CD/SAT nav fiited is very good indeed and sound from the speakers is excellent. The seats are comfy as well.

The only thing we have found with the A6 is that it lacks storage in the main cabin, the door pockets are small and they aren't many "cubby holes" to put things, no pockets on the rear of the front seats and a distinct lack of cup holders (if you like that sort of thing.) and the glove box is filled with Audio gummins We get about 45-50mpg and the RFL is £110. It's not really fast but it's fast enough - it makes a nice cruising car for motorway and "A" roads.

We did have a look at the S Line version as well but found the seats and the ride a little hard. It depends on what you like.

V50 is still fairly usefully sized for the Ikea run IMHO (I ran one for 5 years before my Octy) but unreliable in comparison to Skoda at least in my experience. The estate Octy may only have a "small" prism shaped bit extra but its very useful if you want to fit furniture or anything large and remotely cube shaped in. I used mine to clear a house earlier this year and I reckon there would have been about 50% more trips using the hatch. Its also a lot more pleasant for man's best friend if he's riding out back.

Hatch may meet the OP's needs but the estate is worth it for me and I think it even looks nicer. ;)

Well as mentioned in your ad if i sell my bm before you get your new octy ill certainly be taking a trip to have a look,

Thanks to everyone for their comments, best practise as usual is to test drive and have a feel for what fits our needs.

Test drove an A6 2.7tdi (saloon) and it was sweet. Beautiful smooth engine with plenty of pull, nice comfy seats. Couldn't quite afford it at the time. Silvery interior trim wears badly. Looked at a few that hadn't been that well cared for and interiors had really suffered.

Both cars have their pros and cons. It is so much depending on your personal preferences which car to go for.

Costwise they are in a total other league. OK I am comparing my VRS tdi and my A6 3.0tdi. Only the tyres already make a

huge difference, but that is in my case. Going from 18" on the VRS to 19" on the A6 in summer and from 16" to 18" in winter.

Brakes also (ventilated 312 and solid rear to ventilated 347 and 330). Dieselconsumption is also uncomparable.

Didnt have a car before, that was so reasonable priced and relatively cheap to run as the VRS. (wear and consumption)

But as much as I loved my VRS, as much do I love my A6. Doing the many miles I do, especially here in Germany on

the free stretches of autobahn, I am happy to pay more for the luxury. (in comfort, go and extra fuel) emoticon-0100-smile.gif

not sure if this link will work..?

Comcar.com do a great side-by-side comparison. n.b .the only petrol avant new a6 i could see was the 3litre.. ok the audi's a little bit quicker, but for me, a vRS + remap and 20k in your pocket would be the way to go.

n.b. seats up the vRS boot is actually a smidge BIGGER than the A6!

Great link that Rob, really useful.

Comming from an B7 A4 Avant, I can say that rear legroom is better in the VRS. The boot space is not even comperable. I think the Octy boot space is as big as on the A6.

I agree, had a look at both cars today and really like the octavia over the a6. The boot is pretty big, it seems deeper than the a6 which is ideal for me. So my decision is made, anyone like to buy a BMW 530d sport :)
