How in God's name did this pass an MOT

Featured Replies

I've put the reg into Euro car parts and they are listing 256mm and 239mm front disks as well as the 288mm which as we've already said are for the vRS. Guess I'll have to find out the engine code and look up in a Haynes manual?

These are front brakes right? In which case if it helps my 2003 1.4 16v 100bhp Elegance is 256mm - these ones to be precise:

They match the calipers with "FS-III" stamped on them, I believe

The rear brakes are noticeably smaller but I'm trying to put off changing them...

As long as it passes the brake roller tests.. It'll be a pass. Like has been said above, it's been changed.

The Inner surface of my front discs were corroded, I didn't fail the MOT for it, I only got an Advisory.

See My thread: I think I'll Stop Now!

Mine has had various advisories on front disks since 14k - it's now on 64k on same disks , still well within limits from Haynes ( last check at pad change at 55k was 21.5mm -new is 23 ,change at 19 - so no need for panic) .Yet certain MOT testers seem to decide that theyre worn . And then I've got to argue that without any powers ,apart from visul inspection - they're not correct . At one stage ,AT 33K, I had new front tyres fitted to get panic by fitters -disks were "worn" .Suspect tht this a ploy to get work from those who'll take their word rather than the evidence of test kit and makers data

WOW, they look worse than my rear discs!

Incidentally, when will I know they need replacing? Is there a reliable measure? All I know is that if it /has/ been wet the handbrake can sometimes stick on, requiring a bit of torque and some braveness to undo. But I'm fairly sure it was like that before it was last serviced/MOTd

IF it's rear discs -min thickness ( from Haynes) is 7mm(new is 9).If it's rear drums ,problem will be same as I had , common one -dirt from shoes causing shoes to stick around the join rivet .If discs -possibly just dirt/dust from rear pads .

Cack, I think there's more than 2mm of lip on them :( Thanks though.

It is rear discs, they only stick if I've applied the handbrake after it has been raining so I've always put it down to either me overdoing it or rusting on...

im an MOT tester.. it would make you sick what will pass an MOT!

they could be rusty, scored, worn etc etc will still pass..

the exact failure is.. "SERIOUSLY weekend structure" and thats down to the tester to make the decision.

remember... mot standards are ALOT lower then servicing etc.

Bought my sons Fabia I from the main dealer in Pickering and had them service and MOT it a year later. Shortly after that noticed a vibration under braking. Had a friend of mine who teaches motor mechanics, have a quick look; found the front brake pads were binding and heavily grooved plus the discs were almost rotten. He reckoned there was no way they should have missed this either on service or MOT, if they had been done properly. Thankfully he was happy to help out in getting them replaced with new parts.

Wrote to said dealers service manager but never got a reply; won't be going there again for sure.

Another idea - on a firms Cavalier ( yep - few years ago with cheapskate firm) I had hanbrake stick on problems on rear drums after a lot of rain - common problem said breakdown co - it's water on shoes causing glue like properties which on drying glue shoes to drum . Possibility ???

Nothing wrong with those discs to make them fall below the required test standard.

By current standards, it would appear not. However as I said earlier, I had much much cleaner discs on the Octavia fail for "pitting" a couple of years ago. I wasn't aware that the criteria had changed. However these are only using 60% of the disc surface FFS! I'll be changing them ASAP.
