Scout Alloys made of....? Chewing Gum?

Featured Replies

Hey all,

My wheels are in a shockingly bad state after 37k....they are corroding/oxidising terribly, and in some places the laquer has totally disappeared!! Its only a matter of time before the whole face of the wheels are shot to hell. Anyone would think the car has spent its life in a quarry or something (it hasn't).

Has anyone else had the same experience?

What they hell are the wheels made of, and how on earth can Skoda give the scout the image it has, when the wheels wont stand up to 40k road miles????

yes they scout wheels are known for it. If you're under warranty go speak to your dealer.

Std problem, dealers are normally OK about replacing them provided the peeling hasnt been started by damage to the wheel

A well known and well documented problem.

I am on my second full set, all replaced under warranty.

My dealer tried to wriggle out of it saying that it was fair wear and tear, when I showed him this thread he soon changed his mind!

The polished finish on the spokes is the weak point, once they are chipped kiss goodbye to the laquered finish.

If you are out of warranty and Skoda won't help then get them refurbed but don't get the polished finish, get them painted silver all over.

Mine started like this...

Which soon turned to this...

And can end up worse than this...

Ahhh glad to see its not just mine then! If the warranty is 2 years, then I better get my butt down to the dealer sharpish.....2 of mine are significantly worse than any of those pictures, although 1 granted was caused by a curb collision when car slid sideways off my driveway last year in the ice.

Real shame, I like the polished aspect of the wheels....may look at an alternative powder coat or something if Skoda won't do anything.

Cheers for the responses!

Warranty is three years. I had my last set approved for replacement the week before it expired.

If there is clear damage to the alloys caused by you then you may be asked to contribute to the cost.

Be polite and plead sympathy and you'll be fine

At least Skoda are replacing these wheels under warranty. vRS Limited Edition owners are not so fortunate and these wheels buckle and crack, it's not just cosmetic for us :-(

Not just scouts. It's common on any wheel that's just lacquer over polished alloy. Did it on our Swift GTi , my mates Mondeo ST and last year on SWMBO's C3 Picasso. If Skoda will swap them when it happens that's an improvement on the last 3! However I'm expecting to refurb them at some point!

Similar problem here. Dealer took photos, sent them off and Skoda want to see the wheels before doing anything.

Started out with me buying a new set, dealer sending wheels off and then refunding me for those accepted as 'faulty'. The current idea is for the dealer to have vehicle, send wheels off and when they come back, refit.

My current idea is to leave it until as late as possible before the 3 year warranty expires and have another go. It seems if I buy new wheels, the dealer might get stuck with them after being replaced under warranty or I might have 2 or 3 spare wheels for next time.

I dunno, my old Subaru :smirk: never had these problems after 10 years and my Scout :S has only done about 15000 miles in 30 months.
