***Which brake fluid to use....***

Featured Replies

I currently use AP Racing Super DOT 5.1. (Fronts - AP Racing 6 pots/360mm discs, rears - OEM calipers/330mm discs. Ferodo DS2500 pads all round)

Is there anything any better, this has a dry boiling point of 275 degrees (Celsius) - I have seen others which are rated to 325 degrees (Celsius)!

I know this would be better if hammering around a track all day, but would this ruin 'general' braking?

Your thoughts and opinions please....

Steve :)

I use motul rbf600 which is highly rated and works a treat with my Tarox b32 -6 poters. Never fade and never ever get the dreaded soft pedal feel.

If your really serious use castrol srf.

Thanks, I was thinking perhaps Castrol SRF.

ATE Blue @ 280c (dry) 198c (wet)

ATE Gold @ 536c (dry) 392 (wet)

RBF600 @ 312c (dry) 216 (wet)

All DOT4 compliant

I've been warned off Gold in the past, with folks telling me it'll absord too much water in the UK climate.

tbh I've been thinking that's B/S, its DOT 4 ...

Water absorption and corrosion

The big bugaboo with DOT 3-4 fluids always cited by silicone fluid advocates is water absorption. DOT 3-4 glycol based fluids, just like ethylene glycol antifreezes, are readily miscible with water. Long term brake system water content tends to reach a maximum of about 3%, which is readily handled by the corrosion inhibitors in the brake fluid formulation. Since the inhibitors are gradually depleted as they do their job, glycol brake fluid, just like anti-freeze, needs to be changed periodically. Follow BMW's recommendations. DOT 5 fluids, not being water miscible, must rely on the silicone (with some corrosion inhibitors) as a barrier film to control corrosion. Water is not absorbed by silicone as in the case of DOT 3-4 fluids, and will remain as a separate globule sinking to the lowest point in the brake system, since it is more dense.

- Bull semen! :giggle:

I'm 100% going for Super DOT 4 this time over DOT 5.1.

I doubt I really need to change it, but it has been 4 years since the last change of fluid and I fancy something different.

2 litres should do the job of flushing out the system, shouldn't it?

Steve

2 litre is what you'll have to buy. 1 litre is just not quite enough.

Appears I posted some dodgy info

ATE Gold @ 536c (dry) 392 (wet)

appears someone over the pond got their C and F muddled, couple of UK retailers are stating ( monkfish | K300 )

ATE Gold @ 280c (dry) 198c (wet)

ATE Super Blue is identical in specification to the ATE TYP 200 brake fluid

If this is the case, could be useful. Alternate between blue and amber fluid. Would make it easy to see when complete flush has been achieved.
