Don't shoot me but............Shark Fin Aerial

Featured Replies

Right, just ordered a OEM VW Shark fin aerial (part number VW OEM Shark Fin Antenna - 1K0 035 507 J). Anyway starting to panic, will it work for standard radio reception?

Been reading some horror stories but can't find a simple Yes or No answer.

Can anyone enlighten me please?

Yes it will! BUT the reception in built up areas will be crap but fine in the middle of nowhere. I know this from experience!

FFS! Oh well, will fire it on ebay when it lands up. My buddy works in VW parts so it's not costing me that much

So what basically makes the Shark Fin on the Facelift actually work then?

My Octy came with a Shark Fin as standard back in March and reception has been perfect just about everywhere.

I'm just interested what is actually fitted on the newer cars that meaks a Shark Fin is a viable option and not as a retrofit on the older vehicles?

So how do the new A4's only have a shark fin aerial then lads?

I know that most VAG cars now have aerials in the glass of the rear 1/4 side windows, but the Octy has this (well i know my estate does) aswell so what makes it work perfectly on the A4 etc?

The hatch's don't have an antenna in the glass, hence peps are saying the fin won't work.

Ah right - so the Facelift Hatch DOES have an antenna in the windscreen then?

I honestly hadn't noticed one - I'll have to go and have a look now.

I have a shark fin on my F/L hatch (60 reg) and it works fine, even on the driveway between two houses. Had the same model shark fin on my pre F/L estate (07 reg) and that worked just as well.

Both my shark fins came from www.visualgarage.com (Canada) and come ready painted. You specify the paint code when ordering.

Does it not only come with shark fin if you spec the Columbus unit ?

Mine (10-plate) has the Shark Fin + the stubby aerial at the end of it, no problems with radio reception. I even changed the longer aeriel (the one that looks like a black stick with a black wire wrapped round it) for the shorter smooth stubby one and the radio reception is still fine.

I don't have the Columbus head unit in my car.

This is the same as mine and yes, I ordered Columbus too.

I was under the impression you got the Shark Fin on all vehicles but got the "extra little stubby bit" for the Columbus side of things, maybe I'm wrong.

OEM Shark fin antenna is the telephone antenna and GPS antenna and only supplied with telephone prep kit and/or GPS enabled radios. The radio antenna is the windscreen mounted and/or conventional type mounted immediately behind the fin.
