Flashing light on dash when car is cold? Video included

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I've done a little searching but cannot find any solution to this so hopefully you will be able to help me. Basically when the car (2005 Fabia VRS) is cold, mainly first thing on a morning, when I start it up this light begins flashing on the dash. It starts with 3 loud beeps then flashes constantly.

I took it to the garage in January this year. He did something and it stopped for a week but it came back. Soon as winter ended I didn't see the light again for months until this morning... winter is back and so is the flashing light. I've checked the coolant and topped it up, that doesn't fix it. The strange thing is that after the car has been running for a few minutes I can turn it off and back on and the flashing light won't come back on... until the next morning.

Here is a video > http://youtu.be/OthgHMoAvzA < I made this to show the mechanic in January.

Has anyone else seen this and know of a fix?

Thanks

Get a new expansion bottle.

or he has an air block?

Does only do it when its been cold and first thing in the morning?

Does it go away if you turn the car off and on again. If so its the coolent sensor in the expansion bottle. It gets a bit corroded. You can scrape it off a little but a new expansion bottle plus sensor is about £20.

Mines been doing it for almost 2 years lol. I'm just lazy and will change it when I renew the coolent.

As above, most fabia's do it!

Same problem, was just about to order a new oil pressure sensor, wrong thing to do then judging by these posts?!

could this be done under warrenty you think?

As said, replace the coolant bottle.

Not a difficult job. There is a handy guide here :)

mine does this as well,

only on cold mornings after sitting overnight. Switch it off and back on again and it goes away

AIUI there are two types of expansion bottle. One you can reach the sensor/contacts to scrape, the other, you can't.

Willing to be corrected if I'm wrong...

Yeah, the ones in the Fabia, you can't get to the contact as it's sealed. IIRC the Octavia contacts you can clean though.

Don't ignore it. It could also be a sign of a bona-fide coolant leak.

Mine did this for some time. I changed the expansion tank after about 8 months :giggle:. When it started dong it again a few years later, it was actually losing coolant as the radiator had gone.....

That is exactly correct. I usually get to the end of the street and turn the engine off and back on, the light goes away. If it's not a big deal I'll leave it until after Xmas. Thanks

I don't think it is losing radiator coolant as I was having the same problem in winter at the start of this year. 11 months down the line and the problem has come back but the coolant level is almost unchanged. I'll note your advice though and keep an eye on it.

I take it this is a common problem with all Skoda's then?

Used to happen to me when my water was low

There is also an adaptation channel to alter the resistance value that the dash sees which means the light doesnt come on.

My light comes on too..summer,winter,mornig,afternoon,cold or hot, it doesn't have a preference as to when it strikes. Have changed the expansion bottle along with flushing the system and refilling with long-life coolant. Coolant level doesn't drop, raises with the temperature as normal. Only way to stop it flashing is to turn engine off & on again. Not sure what to do next..help!

I've also had this for a couple of years. Have searched on google before and found that it was common, thought I'd search on here too for opinions, so I guess my sensor thing must have gone. Will ask them to look at next service :)
