Heading back on 14th - plan to stay in Hull on 12th but any suggestions greatly welcomed - either for routes or palces to stay/visit (assuming the boats will be sailing  )

Hi,

depends how far from Hull your thinking of venturing out.

Closest place worth a visit would be Beverley and obviously a bit further on York.

If coastal resort is your thing there's Bridlington and Scarborough, although I personally prefer Whitby further north, with the iconic ruined Abbey on the cliff top.

There's also the Wolds for scenery and again further on the North Yorkshire Moors and the steam railway, which runs from Pickering up to Grosmont via Goathland. Pickering is a quaint small market town with a ruined castle; hidden from view despite being on a hill. Goathland is famous for the former Police drama Heartbeat, very picturesque in a remote sort of way with a number of moorland walks starting and finishing there. Grosmont is mainly associated with the engine sheds which are open to visitors (if there open in Jan :wonder: ).

More inland (north of York) is Hemsley small but worth stopping at and the Howardian Hills around Castle Howard.

South of the river your more restricted; Lincoln is about it.

Hope of help,

TP

If it's snowy and you are near York drive out to Towton. You don't have to get out of the car, just try to imagine the largest battle on English soil.

"On Palm Sunday 1461, in atrocious weather – howling wind, driving sleet and snow – the armies of two disputing Kings of England fought all day on a plateau of land a dozen or so miles south-west of the great medieval city of York in the North of England. Chroniclers then and historians now dispute the numbers involved in the Battle of Towton, but it is most likely that up to seventy-five thousand fought and as many as twenty-eight thousand died in the battle itself and in the rout and massacres that followed."

Twenty-eight thousand men, approximately 1 percent of the English population at the time.

Home safe & sound, travelled from Cairnryan to Hull with a few diversions but no sat nav (more fun that way!). Went through some pretty villages I'd like to revisit in daylight. Journey home took us to Bridlington & Whitby with an overnight stop in Dumfries. A short diversion to Portpatrick (roll on summer for another visit) & home. Loved all of it but will never complain about the number of speed cameras ever again - feel for you guys. The Yeti was amazing, comfortable, economical and a joy to drive best all round car I've had the pleasure to drive.

Glad your trip went well and you enjoyed your short visit to our part of the World :)
