1.2TSI 85 low revs and rough running on cold start

Featured Replies

Took the wife's Fabia TSI 85 over to York yesterday and left it parked up for about 4 hours. Very cold and damp when we got back and on start it ran very rough. The RPM was hovering between 7-800 with spikes up to around the 1000 mark almost as if the ECU didn't know if it was cold. A short dab of throttle appeared to settle it a little. Oh and we had no warning lights on the dash indicating a fault.

Drive home was fine, although we did get a momentary shudder at one set of lights. First time the engine has given us any cause for concern in 15 months and 11500 miles.

Be interested if anyone else has experienced similar.

Hi there

Mine is a 1.2 HTP, and I had the exact same problems as you describe

When I took it to the garage, they put it on the diagnostics machine, which didn't bring anythng up. But what they did was replace the temperature sensor, clean the throttle body out, and replace an o ring for something (Just tried to find the invoice, but can't) It cost a little over £100, but the car now runs sweet as a nut.

Hope this helps

My TSI 105 had a problem with the EPC light coming on together with Limp home mode. I got the dealer to check it and he said that there are two Service bulletins -one to fit an additional shim to a valve on the Turbo which will sort the EPC problem hopefully and the other which is a software update to cure uneven running when cold.

After that is done there is also an update for the DSG.

It is going in again on Wed to have this done so will let you know

Doesn't sound right I know when cold the TSI sounds a bit rough and without air con on idles about 750rpm but not had it like that before.

SJRT thats interesting mine had EPC light come on and limp mode on Friday afternoon having driven and stopped at bank setting off again after heavy rain. That limp home mode is so dangerous the car beeped EPC came up and workshop it did this pulling on to a roundabout and wouldn't go above 200rpm no acceleration at all. Had to stop turn engine off and back on and it went away, keep me updated on what they say as looks like will need to take mine in at some point. Can I ask how long you have had yours? Got mine in Oct last year and now on 14k miles just wondered if it was age/ mileage related.

September 10 and 21k so probably similar build spec

Ours was built late August 2010 and registered early in September :wonder: If the same happens again will have to get the dealer to look but they usually get stuck if there's no fault codes and give it back NFF :S

Sounds like there could be an update needed for the earlier 1.2 tsi's will call dealer on monday see when they can have a look, agreed if the computer says no then that is pretty much it :S.

Hi TP, take a look here. Just a Roomster with hickups. Now Roomster is 17 months old with 23100Km on clock and that weird behaviour seem to be bad memory.

My 1.2 TSI 105 didnt really like it when it was cold/damp, it used to idle VERY high and would often stutter when pulling away and kangaroo a bit sometimes. Being that the rest of the car was naff I wasnt overly surprised by it!

Well car has now been in and had new shim fitted they didn't say if any software update has been done but it seemed really quiet and refined more than usual and the dsg box seems to hold gears for longer on hills rather than changing down to about 4th when 5th or 6th would be fine. All credit to Skoda after a brief argument regarding stored codes when the ecp light came on they took the car wed morning provided me with a brand new 1.6 tdi Ibiza (which was nice, though felt a bit heavy and didn't feel that quick) within 2 hours and then called me this morning to advise all ready to collect :D. Fingers crossed that its all fixed now it also returned the same economy as the ibiza of 54mpg on the way back.
