Aftermarket alloys jiggle at high speed

Featured Replies

get them balanced at a bmw dealer...

dunno why but they seem much better at it that local tyre bays who are completely hopeless....

If it only started when you changed the wheels then you know whats caused it. I would bet the Alloys are out of shape, I buckled 3 Woolfrace alloys (made of old coke cans I think) in a year, I now run some Cesam hardened Alloys & they are fine despite some serious abuse.

The wheels will buckle on the inside which is the un suported part of the wheel. the only way to check it with the tyre on is to spin the alloy & watch the inside of the rim carefully DONT DO IT ON THE CAR, I know someone who was killed when a jack gave way. Take it to the tyre dealer & when they put it on the balancer ask them to spin it slowly & carefully watch how the inside runs all the way till it stops spinning, it only shows up at fairly low revs. The only other possibility I can think of is the seperate centre rings dont match your hubs so the wheel isnt sitting perfectly. If you havent got seperate centres check with the wheel manufacturer to see if you should have them

If they are buckled stick the worse ones on the back which will help but the only cure will be some decent wheels

May sound silly but are the bolts correctly tightend?

I was going to mention this :) maybe one bolt has cross threaded!

I'm taking the wheels off at the weekend to clean my callipers so I will do the front & rear switch and if I still have the same problem i'll get it rebalanced, the problem is there is a 1000 possibilities and only 1 cure :( I can drive the car normally up to say 100, and although there are vibrations through the wheel it's not the most annoying thing, but anything above that and it's awful.

I went a different way to put it through it's paces on the way home round some nice low speed twisties and after the brakes had really warmed up I got the steering wheel jiggle again, again violently until the brakes literally ceased to work, and I had to granny it home...I'l report my finds over the weekend...

Just a thought but do the after market alloys and the originals have the same offset ?(from the hub of the alloy to 'centreline' between the rims of the wheel').

If the offset is different you may get more or a 'different' vibration transmitted up the suspension due to the offset altering the camber even if the alloy/tyre is totally balanced and the bushes and tracking are okay.

The alloys are the Octavia vRS 16" ones so i'd assume they'd be the same

And there was me thinking my car was buggered :o .

Since I had my new tyres but on I have found the wheel vibrates /judders/shakes quite violently at higher speeds (80 mph plus)

Was expecting a wheel to come off and it was slightly unnerving

So either my wheels need aligning or the tyres are affecting things

Car is going in on Thursday for rear brake light and new wipers so might ask them to check it over.Is it a quick job to check it out?

If it's only since you got your new tyres, it sounds like it's just a balancing problem. Some tyre places are better at sorting this than others and I've now found a local one who get it spot on :D To balance them, they take the wheel off and stick it on a computerised thingummybob which tells them where to tap the weights. Get them to stick the weights on the insides of the rims, rather than the outside too :D

And bear in mind it could be a moulding falut in the tyre so don't be put off with claims thay've done all they can. You can ask for the tyres to be sent to the maker for a technical report.

Ive just had some 17" Octi Spider alloys offset ET38 and have had no noticable problems, had them balanced before they were put on and two new tyres, ill keeo this thread in mind... :D

my jiggle has faded as the miles have increased however when I get my new tyres I will be definately getting it done at a Skoda dealer, that way I have some comeback. National Tyres, Wilko Motorsave, Kwikfit etc all seem to employ 14 year old pre-pubescent teenagers who have no understanding of what you are talking about.
